Alice Saxton Ealey, affectionately known as “Sittabae” was born on December 8, 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late James & Laura Saxton. She was the 2nd oldest of 6 children to this union…. but if you asked her, she would say SHE was the oldest.
Alice CHERISHED education, and she was blessed with intelligence. At the age of 15, she graduated from the Jefferson County Public School. At the age of 19, She received her Bachelor of Arts from Talladega College- and at this time, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority Inc. During her time there, she met and married Joseph E. Ealey. From this union they had (3) children; Joseph Jr. (Peter-deceased), Laura (Skinny) and James (Giz)
“It is only the IGNORANT who despise EDUCATION” …. Quintus Horatius Flaccus.
Knowing how much Alice cherished education, she sought to apply her “college knowledge” and become a teacher to impart her education and values to others. She taught as a teacher at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf 1953-1955, then the Westside Elementary School in Talladega 1955 to 1959. When the family moved to Cleveland Ohio, —-because of Joseph’s job relocation, she enrolled as a teacher for the then …Cleveland Board of Education from 1989 to 2004….thereby spending 51 years as a teacher in the classroom. As a teacher, she touched many lives of the students who, to this day, remember her STYLE and “way” with WORDS. She always wanted the younger generation to grasp how important education is. She strongly felt that education was a JOURNEY, not a DESTINATION.
She accepted Christ early in her life, and when she moved to Cleveland, she became a member of Lane Metropolitan Church C.M.E. in 1960 where she served in many different organizations.
Vice-president of the Second Episcopal District, President of the Board of Christian Education
President of the Women’s Missionary Society, Correspondent for the Dept. of Lay Ministries. Charter member of the J.C. Coles Fellowship.
But of all these things, Alice was best known for her public speaking and narrating.
Alice had a very productive and rewarding life. She ALWAYS felt blessed to have lived her “3 score and 10”. On April 6, 2022, she was called home to her eternal rest—- a far far better resting place than she has ever known. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter Laura, a son James(Annie), 6 grandchildren- Adam, Joseph, Laura Jr., James Jr., Alycia(deceased) and Conner, 1 great grandchild- Kynnedi and a multitude of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
