Annie Laura Molton was born December 10,1942 in Montgomery, Alabama to her parents Henry Molton and Christine Johnson. At an early age she moved to Cleveland, Ohio with her uncle William Harbison who was like a father to her.
She later attended and graduated from East Technical High School here in Cleveland, Ohio. She was gainfully employed at TRW then transferred to General Motors as a Part Inspector and worked there until her retirement in the early 2000’s. Annie Laura attended the Faith Cumberland Baptist Church on the east side of Cleveland where she joined and became a member, then humbly served on the Missionary Society Board. She faithfully attended church until she became ill in early 2025.
Annie Laura married her first and only husband James DeVoil Bates and from this marriage four children were born, Darrell, Valerie, James Jr., and Melvin Bates. Annie Laura was a devoted mother and loved her children dearly.
Anyone that knew Annie Laura recognized early on that she was classy and admired the way she dressed. She was a spunky little lady with a beautiful personality, loved to entertain and was the life of the party. She loved people and no one was a stranger to her. She was infamous for interior decorating and her home always stood out from the rest. Her favorite colors were purple and silver.
Annie Laura’s three most treasured memories are her gorgeous brown eyes, her contagious smile, and her endless love for her family. She had a smile that would light up a room because it displayed her joy from within. Her love for her family was never ending. She was always there in a time of need and was supportive unconditionally.
Annie Laura’s beloved mother Christine, son Darrell, uncle William and brothers Roosevelt and James proceeded her in death. Annie Laura leaves behind her loving children: Valerie, James Jr. and Melvin, niece Tonia (Anthony), nephew Roosevelt Jr. (Tangela), and LaVail, granddaughters LaTara and Tiesha, grandsons Jeffrey, James, and Micah, eight great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
