Darryl F. Edwards & Family left a message on March 28, 2020:
Mrs. Toni Baker, The photo says it all. What an amazing shot for remembrance. Bennie could light up any place with his million dollar smile. He would light up any basketball court with his razor sharp jump shot and unforgiving drives to the basket. He was the light in the community as a good neighbor, friend, brother, son, father, husband, model police officer and much more. Bennie was a true legend in our community. Most importantly, Bennie was a servant of God who shared his talents with many just as God had ordained him to do. Bennie was predestined to lead and serve and he did. The Bible says “well done my faithful servant” (Matt. 25.23) and I would apply this to Bennie’s legacy. I believe Bennie fulfilled his purpose here on earth and you and the family have much to be proud of. May the family receive the Peace of God knowing that he will experience eternal and everlasting life, John 3:16. God bless you and your family. The Edwards Family

My heart goes out to Bennie’s wife Toni, their family and all of his loved ones. I worked with Bennie at Woodmere PD and was heartbroken to receive the news of his passing. Even though he retired he still visited us at the station whenever he came through. He loved seeing others happy. I relocated to Alaska this past winter, driving the whole way, and Bennie checked in on me to make sure I was safe and OK. He cared about the residents he served and his coworkers. I’m so sorry for your loss, he will be greatly missed. We will never forget his kindness nor his beautiful smile.

Toni and Family, to say I am sorry for your loss seems a bit hollow; but, what other words are there? Bennie was an amazing man, father, husband, brother and friend. This loss is just one that is unjust incomprehensible! This is a path I prayed that you would not have to walk, but know that as God carries you, there are others also at your side. Know how very much I care my dear friend! Psalms 61:2... Much love
Tanesha Steward left a message on March 25, 2020:
My heart, mourns for Mrs.Toni and Bennie's family. Bennie, was the kindest neighbor anyone could ever have! As our neighbor, he was a Man, who had worn many hats! He was a great husband to sweet Toni, Police officer, skater, ball player, lawn master, and a Barber just to name a few! And let me just say, my son and I really appreciated his Barbering skills on some Saturday mornings! Bennie, never hesitated to help out the older neighbors, who needed anything, nor to help out a single Mother, with a young son, struggling with up keep of a home, that she knew nothing about! Bennie would often see us struggling in our yard, with planting flowers, mowing the lawn, to over grown bushes & tree branches! Anyone, who knew Bennie, knew that he would give corrective criticism, then apologize for politely telling you how to do things the right way! Next thing I know, we'll look around and here comes Bennie with the proper tools, to get the job done! Lol, I was just so happy, that he'd helped us along the way! Btw, our yard never looked as nice & manicured, as he & Mrs. Toni's. I could go on & on! However, Bennie's gonna be greatly missed! He was just an all around great guy! Be Blessed & stay encouraged! For anyone who believes, ""We all loved him, but GOD loved him best".. Your neighbors, Tanesha & Dylan

My heart broke when I was told that my Big brother in Blue and friend passed away. You were the most athletic, well dressed, dedicated officer, besides Chief Lockhart, that I knew. I can remember you and Chief Lockhart challenging each other to a race every now an then to see who was the fastest. Thanks Bennie, for sharing your faith and giving me and another coworker our first Daily Walk Bible and also for the skills you shared of taking care of my lawn. " Giving it a hair cut as you would say". Toni, I appreciate the warm smiles and professional advice you gave me on several occasions. Sending comfort, peace and prayers your way always. Regina "G" Glenn

Gale Powell Harris left a message on March 25, 2020:
My sincere condolences to the entire Baker family. Growing up in the southwood Estates neighborhood, Bennie was one of the basketball players for the neighborhood. We would see him rolling in his light blue Volkswagen Beetle and watch the competitions held at the Robinson’s house from my parents front steps. An avid skater, who sort of taught me how to roller skate. (still can’t roller skate). Hand dancing, I couldn’t do well either. He was the neighborhood friend, big brother, always willing to help whenever and however type of guy. Always had a smile. Bennie will be remembered always. My prayers are of comfort and understanding to his wife, children, siblings and lifetime friends. He was that lifetime friend. RIH Bennie.
