Bessie Mae Combs was born August 8, 1933, in Yazoo City, Mississippi to the late Asa and Louise Foster. She was educated and graduated from South High School in Akron’s Class of 1951. She continued her education in nursing school, where she graduated in 1956 with an LPN Degree. She was employed at Akron City Hospital from 1959-1970; after that she was employed at Broadview Medical Center from 1971-1998 when she retired. She touched many lives during her many years at the hospital.
Bessie was a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Lavorn Merryweather, where she served on the Deaconess Board, the Mother Board and taught Sunday School. She later joined Dominion Family Church under the Leadership of Bishop Marc Neal, until the time of her passing.
Bessie loved to cook, travel and shop, but most of all she enjoyed the times she spent with her family and grandchildren. She also was a member of the North Hill Neighborhood Women’s Club.
On Friday, May 31, 2024, Bessie Mae Combs transitioned from her earthly home, and entered eternal rest at the age of 90.
Bessie was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Oliver Combs; one brother, Clem Foster; son, Theodore Davis Sr. and one great grandchild.
She leaves to cherish fond memories sons, David (Gayle) Davis and Mark Combs; daughter-in-law, Alice Davis; grandchildren, Theodore Davis Jr, Terra Davis-Green, Marcheri and Markisha Combs, Tiffany Evans and Erin Brown; brother, Will Arnold Jr.; one nephew, Chris Foster; 14 great grandchildren (1 preceded her in death – Damari Amir Neal), and 1 great-great grandchild.
