On Saturday, January 16, 2021, Brian L. Hayes, MD, beloved husband, father, and son, passed away at the age of 45 years old after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on June 24, 1975, in Hartford, Connecticut to Claude and Vanessa (Calhoun) Hayes.
Brian always had a determined spirit, not easily swayed, even as a child. He also had a spirit of giving. He always made sure to share his belongings with other children. Brian had an old soul. Some of his best times as a child were spent with Reverend Davis on fishing trips and Grandpa (William Calhoun) in the garden.
Brian graduated from Springfield North High School in 1993. He was the first Black Student Body President in the school’s history. After high school, he continued his education at Kent State University earning a Bachelor’s in Integrated Life Sciences and then his medical degree from Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine (now NEOMED). Brian entered training at Summa Health System for his internship and completed his radiology residency at University Hospitals in Cleveland. He also completed a one-year fellowship in Neuroradiology at University Hospitals. Once he completed his training, he took a job with Akron Radiology Inc. until the present.
Brian met his wife, Garimah, the love of his life, while attending Kent State and the two were married in September of 2000. They share three children Sydney, Alexander, and Taylor.
Brian was an avid sports fan – Ohio State, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and Cleveland Cavaliers. He enjoyed attending those games, first with friends and then with his children. He was also a fan of music, especially jazz including Miles Davis and BB King. He shared his love of the blues with his children. Taylor has been known to sing Johnnie Taylor – “these last two dollars” at the dinner table.
Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Sometimes just getting ice cream but also on trips to the beach and Disney. Many fond memories were made together as a family that will be cherished.
He was preceded in death by his father, Claude; grandmother, Willie Louise Calhoun; grandparents, Quedell and Mary Hayes; aunt, Sheila Davis; uncles, Willie Hayes and Michael Hayes as well as other aunts and uncles.
Brian is survived by his mother, Vanessa; his wife, Garimah; children, Sydney Louise, Alexander Lee and Taylor Leigh; aunt Karolenn; in-laws, the Jones family; aunts, Mary Jan Hayes, Queneva (Eric) Hughes, Arlissa Hayes; uncles, Richard Calhoun, Timothy Hayes, Kenneth (Felicia) Hayes, Quedell Hayes, Lenard Hayes, James (Leslie) Hayes; best friend/brother, Ronald (Sawanna) Graves as well as a whole host of family and friends.
