Carol Jean Jones (neé Fenton) was born September 19, 1929 in Youngstown Ohio to Lillian May (Streiner) Fenton and H.W. “Hode” Fenton. She is survived by her daughter Sarah Jane Gould (neé Jones) and her son-in-law Jeffrey Thomas Gould.
During her high school years, she was a member of Latin Club and the Rifle Team; she was also known as “Slugger” by her neighborhood friends with whom she played softball. She received her bachelor’s degree from Kent State University, in Art and Education, with also a concentration in German.
Carol was a public-school teacher for much of her career, first at the McDonald Local School District teaching art for a few years, then at Austintown-Fitch High School, teaching German for over thirty years. She was much loved by her German-language students, who often preferred to come to her for personal advice as well as for academic help.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. James Episcopal Church in Boardman Ohio, and later became a member of Hontaris Lutheran Church in Youngstown Ohio; in 1994 she moved to the Cleveland area to live with her daughter Sarah, where she became a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Solon Ohio; at ORLC she served on the kitchen crew for church luncheons for several years, as well as the evangelism team and Traditional Choir. She was also a member of the Chagrin Valley Choral Union for 10 years. Carol loved classical music, particularly opera; she held season tickets to Cleveland Opera for ten years and enjoyed over 40 productions during that time.
Carol will be greatly missed by her near and extended family, and a host of dear friends.
