Carrie Lucile Giles was born on August 19, 1925, in York, Alabama, to James and Janie Hinton.
In 1941, Carrie met the love of her life, Eddie Giles, on a blind date to the movies. Their connection quickly blossomed, and they were united in marriage on March 25, 1942, in Livingston, Alabama.
Carrie and Eddie welcomed their only child, a daughter named Cora.
In 1956, the family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where both Carrie and Eddie found employment at Winter Papers Company, dedicating many years of service until the company’s closure.
Carrie was a devoted member of Mount Zion Church of Oakwood Village, where she served faithfully as one of the Ladies in White. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she enjoyed attending Bible study as often as she could.
Carrie had many passions that brought her joy. She loved fishing, gardening, watching game shows, working on word search puzzles, and visiting the casino. She also had a fondness for lottery scratch-offs and treasured her frequent shopping trips to Goodwill, which she proudly considered her form of exercise.
To her family, she was lovingly known as “Granny.” She deeply cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren never missing a moment to boast about their accomplishments with pride and affection.
On June 25, 2025, Carrie Lucile Giles peacefully passed away in Cleveland, Ohio, at the remarkable age of 99.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Janie Hinton; her beloved husband, Eddie Giles; her daughter, Cora Courtland; and her son-in-law, William Courtland.
Carrie leaves behind a loving legacy through her four granddaughters: Annette Courtland, Corlette Marshall, Jeanette Triggs (Reginald), and Sharon Courtland; two great-granddaughters: Angela Harris (Jason) and Ashlee Courtland; and four great-great-grandchildren: Aaliyah Courtland, Blake Harris, Bryson Harris, and London Newman. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
