Charles R. Smartt, 90, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024 after a short illness.
He was born on December 20, 1933 in South Pittsburg, Tenn., to the late Beulah and Clarence Smartt.
A devoted husband and father, Charles spent most of his life in Akron, Ohio. He retired as a machine operator from B.F. Goodrich Chemical Plant in 1994 after over 25 years of service. Charles was a kind and caring man with a great sense of humor who didn’t meet a stranger. He didn’t hesitate to offer a helping hand to those in need. In his earlier years, Charles was an artist who enjoyed drawing portraits, photography, and painted some of the many murals at recreation centers and other locations throughout the city.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Smartt, parents, siblings Shirley Boddy and Walter Smartt, and daughter Tanya Bivins-Duncan. He is survived by son, Damon Smartt, daughters, Laura Smartt of Akron, Ohio, Nina (Smartt) Smitherman of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and Amber Williams of Cleveland, Ohio, grandchildren, Micah-Sean Simon, Ava and Alia Smitherman, Jason, Justin and Jarvis Duncan, and Trayvon Williams, along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A special thanks to cousin, Michael Baldwin and Pinnacle Rehabilitation and Nursing Center staff for their care and compassion over the past year.
