Charlie Davis Beecher age 95 passed away Sunday, December 1, 2024, peacefully at home. He was the faithful husband of Annie Ruth Beecher. They shared 61 years of marriage together. Born in Russellville, Alabama, he was the seventh child of Joseph and Mary Bell Beecher. He came to Akron Ohio in 1949 as part of the Great Northward Migration. He was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for forty years.
Charlie Beecher was originally a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where he was superintendent of the largest Sunday School in Northeast Ohio for twenty years. He then, along with best friend Ernie Calhoun Sr. and Gus Brown and others started the Akron Alliance Christian and Missionary Fellowship Church of which he remained a member for the rest of his life.
Charlie, affectionately known as “PawPaw” by his many grandchildren, was a kind and mild-mannered man who never spoke ill of people. He was a devout Christian and strong man of faith who lived an exemplary life. His children never heard him say one curse word, which was impressive as his children were extremely rambunctious, mischievous, closely spaced together and according to his aunt “legion”. His greatest joys in life included eating collard greens, corn bread and desserts, managing his apartments and dining at The Golden Corral. Everyone who knew him was aware that an expensive gift was a waste, but a pie or cake he considered a treasure. He lived a very physical life. He was a good (according to his siblings) welter weight boxer when he was younger and was doing activities well into his 90s such as cutting grass, raking leaves, changing flat tires, repairing roofs, plumbing and electrical repairs, hauling trash and performing upkeep and landlord duties to his apartments. And he attended church every Sunday.
He is survived by loving spouse Annie Ruth Beecher, children Diane (Beecher) Washington, Daryl Beecher, Charlotte (Beecher) Cannon, Seymour ( Darlene) Beecher, and Carrie (Beecher) Wright, grandchildren Darryl Beecher, Derrick Beecher, Michael Goode Jr., Cierra Davison, Christopher Beecher, Cayden Wright, Cevanna Wright, Aaron Washington, Charles Washington Jr., Samantha Washington, Micah Washington, Gabrielle Beecher and Serenity Beecher and scores of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Joeseph and Mary Bell Beecher, brother Curtis Beecher, sister Lina Mae Beecher Sanks, brother Travis Josephus Beecher, brother Millard Beecher, brother Ellis Neal Beecher, brother J. T. Beecher, sister Reevis Beecher Hill, brother Clarence Beecher, brother Keith Alvin Beecher, sister Lucille “Mick” Beecher Burnette, brother Dallas Beecher, brother Henry Beecher and lifelong best friend Ernie Calhoun Sr. He is survived by his youngest brother Otis “Short” Brown Beecher (Pearl) and Special Sister Ann Chandler.
The family of Charlie D. Beecher would like to thank Akron Alliance Fellowship and Pastor Gus Brown, Cynthia Millender, Pastor Melvin Gaines, Michelle Bryant, Otis Beecher, dear friends Charles and Joyce Fouts and the entire team at Stewart and Calhoun. To all, your sympathy for our recent loss will long be remembered. Thank you for the many ways in which you helped us during our loss. We deeply appreciate your kindness.
