Charlotte Marie Brown was born on Monday September 24, 1934 to the late Charles Lewis and Elizabeth Thomas Smith in Clairton, Pennsylvania. She was the second of four daughters born to this union. Her sisters, Ella (Frank) Hollis, Lavern (John Moore), and Madeline (Raymond Hatcher), all preceded her in death.
Charlotte grew up attending Gethsemane Church of God in Christ under the pastorate of Elder Ithiel Clemmons. This church became the cornerstone of the community. Charlotte grew to love God from attending the church. At the age of 16 she gave her life to Christ and never looked back. She gave 150% to the faith. She travelled with the saints throughout the community as they went to hospitals to pray for the sick and the shut in. She was very serious about her faith.
Charlotte was united in matrimony to Charles Curtis Brown. From this union six children were born: Charles Curtis (Curt) Jr. (deceased), Shawn Keith, Eugene Allen, Jonathan Phillip (deceased), Charlene Rae, and Richard Wilfred. In 1963, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio and joined Calvary C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Richard Brown, her brother-in-law. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and became a license missionary. Charlotte loved to travel. She had a beautiful smile and a friendly personality that allowed her to make friends everywhere she went. Charlotte loved everyone she encountered, but she had a special place in her heart for her family and friends. She kept a journal with birthdays and anniversaries of her all her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She made sure that her loved ones, every birthday, would receive a card with a special, extensive, handwritten message, each line written in love. Sometimes the card included ice cream money and candy. She would always jokingly include in her love note “Don’t spend it all in one place”.
Charlotte leaves to cherish and celebrate her life her children, Shawn (Vickie) Eugene, Charlene (Oscar, deceased) Johnson, Elder Richard (Tracy); grandchildren: Shantae Decarlow, Charles C. III, Shawna, Antwaun, Aisha, Chardae, Olivia, and Oscar Charles; four great grandchildren; Treston, Taelynn, Ny’Jaun, and Jamir along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2nd Timothy 4:7-8
