Christiane Rose Irmgard Johnson was born December 23, 1943 in Kolberg, Germany and died at the age of 77 on Monday September 6, 2021 in Atlanta at her daughter’s home from complications of emphysema. In hospice care for a few weeks prior to her death, she died peacefully in her sleep.
Mrs. Johnson immigrated to the United States as a young woman to be with the soldier she fell in love with after meeting on a streetcar in Germany. She settled with her family in Akron, Ohio where she graduated from The University of Akron with an undergraduate and later a master’s degree in nursing. She worked as a floor nurse at the Akron Children’s Hospital and then rose through the ranks of public health at the Akron Health Department to become the Director of Nursing before ultimately retiring to help raise her first grandchild. She enjoyed helping others reach their potential, from teen mothers she mentored to colleagues whose careers she helped develop. She faithfully volunteered at her local Battered Women’s Shelter. She was a voracious reader, always keeping countless books at the ready. Those who knew her often marveled at her feisty spirit, irreverent sense of humor and her willingness to speak her mind directly as well as her empathy, kindness and generosity, always being quick to hug and forgive. She instilled a strong work ethic in her children, emphasizing the value of education. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her loving husband of more than 40 years William Johnson; her parents, Fritz and Elisabeth Wolf and her sister, Christa Wolf.
She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children, Christine “Nicky” Johnson, Esq. of Arizona, Dominic A. (Carolina) Johnson, M.D. of Virginia and Amanda E. (Tim) Williams, M.D. of Georgia; grandson, Timothy; granddaughter, Zoe; bonus granddaughters, Sydney, Mila and Caitlin; sisters, Renate Billups and Monika Erlenwein of Germany; brothers in-law, Larry and LeeMorris; sisters in-law, Beverly, Doris, Barbara, Melvin, Pam, Vera and Delilah; best friend, Marianne; longtime friends, Penny and Beverly; loving former daughter-in-law, Velvet; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, other friends and mentees.
