It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David John Wesley Greene Jr. who left us on July 3, 2025 at the age of 88.

Dave was born on July 28, 1936, in Headland, Alabama to John W. Greene and Juanita Robinson Greene. In 1949, the family moved to Akron, Ohio, as part of the Great Migration. Dave attended Akron Public Schools and the University of Akron, earning a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in education. Dave was the first of his extended family to earn a college degree, a motivation to all of his family. Prior to attending the University of Akron, Dave served in the United States Marine Corps.

Professionally, Dave was a dedicated educator and a gifted coach. He coached basketball, football and track at various Cleveland public schools, including East Technical High School. Dave continued his love of teaching and coaching when he joined the faculty of Cuyahoga Community College where he served as professor, athletic director and head basketball coach. His teams twice played for the national title. Dave retired from Cuyahoga Community College in 1997.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings, Woodrow Greene, Bernice Greene McCail, Mary Greene Burnett, Robert “Billy” Greene, Edgar “Phil” Greene, and son Reginald Edward. Dave is survived by his loving partner, Helen, sons Leslie David (Dr. Cheryle Snead) Greene, Houston, Texas, Paul David Greene, Cleveland, Ohio, brother Attorney Charles L. (Delores) Greene, Tallmadge, Ohio, sisters-in-law Sharon Jones Greene and Renee L. Greene, Akron, Ohio. He will also be deeply missed by many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Services will be held at Calhoun Funeral Home, 23000 Rockside Road, Bedford Heights, OH 44146. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. with services at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be sent to the family C/O Calhoun Funeral Home.
