Derrick Lee Harper transitioned to his eternal place of jubilation on January 11, 2021. He was born on May 19, 1962, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Arthur Lee and Carrie Lee Harper. He had two children from his first marriage to Linda Ray: Davina Preston, and Davonn Henderson. He also had three children from his second marriage to Marie Scott: twins Octaviah Harper (deceased) and Zataviah Harper, and only son Dallas Harper.
Derrick graduated from Garfield High School in 1980. He worked for many years at Metro Transit in Akron, OH, and ended his career at Maxion Wheels after over 10 years of service.
Derrick was extremely funny and could find humor in almost any situation, often bringing people and himself to tears with laughter. He loved to play cards, sing, watch TV, dance, and entertain friends. Derrick was a compassionate person and helped care for his father and mother until their death. More importantly, he loved the Lord and the church, gospel music, and an old fashion Baptist choir. Most memorable, was Derrick’s passion for directing the choir at The Greater Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lee and Carrie Lee Harper, and daughter, Octaviah Harper.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughters, Davina (Antonio) Preston, Davonn (Randell) Henderson, and Zataviah Harper; son, Dallas (Nicole) Harper; sister, Zemoria (Renard) Parnell; brother, Zechary Harper; grandchildren, Trenton Preston, Rylee Preston, and Kawhi Love, Antonio II (Monique) Preston, Meghan Preston, Brenna Preston, and Xavier Preston; nieces, Jocelyn M. (Maceo) Biggers, Jolicia N. Harper, and Jina Harper; nephews, Jason Harper, Zechary, Jr. (Tasia) Harper, Renzy (Shante) Parnell, Remarr Parnell, Ryland Parnell, and Rynell Parnell; childhood and life-long friend, Ben (Kelly) Kimbrough, and goddaughter, Janeil Yates and along with a host of great-nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. He was truly loved and will be greatly missed.
