A Time of Birth . . .
Dorothy Lee Berry was born, in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 24th, 1937, to the union of Jim & Mariah Berry, both of which proceeded her in death. She was the youngest of eight siblings, all who proceeded her in death. On December 14th of 1963, she was united in holy matrimony to her lifelong husband, Ruel Odod, who also proceeded her in death. To this union were born their two daughters, Vikki & Chris.
A Time to Serve . . .
Dorothy accepted Christ as her savior at seven years of age, and she attended Second Mount Olive Baptist Church. She worked at University Hospital for 15 years, until her girls were born, and she chose the career of stay-at-home mom. Shortly after both her girls started school, she began volunteering at the Cleveland Food Bank, where she worked for over 30 years. She has taken many people to the food bank to volunteer, including her girls, family, friends, and many neighborhood children. After retiring from the Cleveland Food Bank she continued her work, by serving refreshments at her church on Sundays. She rededicated her life to Christ in 1997, at the age of 60, joined Progressive Baptist Church of Tomorrow, and was baptized on Jan. 4th, 1998.
Dorothy was affectionately known as Momma Lynch to her children’s friends, Dot to her longtime friends Howard Anderson and Gracie Scott, and My Girl to her good friend Ken Price. She was a great mom and mother figure, as well as a loyal & dependable friend, aunt, and cousin. Her home, voice, and smile were a comfort zone. She always took time to give guidance, a shoulder to cry on, words of wisdom, a good laugh, and a loving rebuke, when necessary.
Dorothy’s favorite past time included watching sports: tennis, golf, basketball, football, but mainly baseball and swamp people (catching alligators). Her other passion was cooking and delivering her family and friends their favorite dishes, until she was no longer able, at which time she delegated that job to her daughters. The song, “You Are Loved” was lived by Dorothy and is her continued message to her family and friends.
A Time of Thanksgiving . . .
Dorothy was 1st diagnosed with cancer in 2007, and although it came with many struggles, she was able to give thanks even in the mist of this 16 year journey. She was very thankful for her medical care team, which included the wonderful Doctor Allen Kline and Doctor Bachar Dergham. She often talked of how much the Lord blessed her and her family during this time, and how thankful she was for the many, many, many people who supported and prayed for her.
A Time to Morn . . .
Left to celebrate the life and Legacy of Dorothy, are her two devoted Daughters and Son-in-Love: Vikki Lynch, Chris & Jason Jones, many others she lovingly called her children: Reggie (Kathy), LaShon, Doretha, George, Paul, Tyrone, Ali and Marcenia, one Grand God-Daughter: Deion Knuckles, two Brother in Laws: Lacy Lynch & Eddie Lynch (Ruth), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors as well as a multitude of people whose lives are forever changed, because Dorothy Lee Lynch loved.
