Essex Hayward was born on March 1, 1925, in Elko, Georgia, to the parents of Lincoln and Anna Hayward. He was born the fifth child of 18 siblings. Essex found Christ at an early age and prioritized his relationship with God through consistent prayer.
He joined the army in 1943 and is a World War II Veteran. He is also a member of the Freemasons. In 1953, Essex moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Max Hayes Carpentry Program where he worked in the local union until retiring from carpentry. He married his life partner, Annie Ruth Durden, on October 6, 1956. From this union, seven children were born: Barretta (Alex), Patricia (Richard), both deceased, Nathaniel (Jacquita), Antoinette (Joe Jr.), Anthony, Eric, and Aaron. 17 grandchildren (1 deceased), 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
Alongside his wife Annie, Essex opened Parkwood Grocery. Parkwood served as a Black-owned staple in the community and a method of providing for their family for over 55 years. As an extremely hard worker, Essex owned and operated Parkwood until he was over 90 years old. Essex loved gardening and spending quality time with his family. His treasured memories were family picnics and reunions in Georgia.
On November 8, 2025, at 100 years old, Essex Hayward left behind a host of family, friends, and loved ones. As he always says, “God knows best.”
