Frederick Lamar Hill was born in Bedford, Ohio on May 24, 1945 to Christine Hill. Christine met and married Emmett W. Golden who reared Frederick as his own son. Frederick was eventually joined by three sisters and two brothers. You could officially call this family the Brady Bunch.
It was no secret that Frederick took his role of the “oldest child” very serious all through their childhood and adult lives. With that, he earned the nickname of “Butch”, a name that commanded authority. This nickname certainly complimented his stature and strong sense of presence he displayed. Frederick was a graduate of R.B. Chamberlin High School in Twinsburg, Ohio in 1964 and two months later, he joined the United States Air Force and served during the Vietnam era as a Security Police Officer. He was honorably discharged in 1968.
After his service to the country, Frederick worked in various industries from being a professional hair stylist to selling insurance but his love for protecting and serving called him to the Cleveland Police Department in 1978. He thoroughly enjoyed his job serving in the 4th Precinct District of Cleveland for 25 years only retiring after his bout with colon cancer which he persevered and was able to beat.
In Frederick’s spare time, he enjoyed cooking for family and friends and could cook anything! He was known for providing daily dinners to the Cleveland Airport staff, his last assignment before retiring. He was also an avid fisherman, a hobby he picked up from his grandfather as a little boy. Frederick was motivated by love (1 John 5:3). In addition to his love for cooking and fishing, Frederick also had a love for giving being a generous financial gifter to a host of local and national charities.
His admiration didn’t end with family, friends, cooking, fishing and being a blessing to those in need, he also had a love for all of God’s creatures particularly dogs and birds (Genesis 1:20-22). He took pride in feeding the birds daily as he had multiple bird feeders hanging in the back yard. He would peruse the Ohio bird book so he could identify his flying friends. He also had birds on the inside of the house, a talking African Grey Congo Parrot name Cicero, a Finche, a Love Bird and a Dove. The birds were in good company with the latest edition to his family, a rambunctious Yellow Lab name Rosco.
If you sat long enough to talk with Frederick, he was sure to tell you about his children and could be quoted saying “I am blessed!” His daughter Shena was born out of his union with Sherwen and his son Parris was born out of his union with Jan. Parris imitated his father by walking in his footsteps and exuding the same determination, resolve and self-confidence. Shena continued to pull at his heart strings even in her adult life as she still with affection and admiration called him “Daddy”. She blessed him with a granddaughter, Nina that he simply adored and even taught her how to fish.
