George Ernest Alexander was born August 4,1935 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born to the union of Richard A. Alexander (deceased) and Aroulia Alexander (deceased). His older brother WIlliam, and two younger brothers Frank and Malcolm, all preceded him in death.
George was also the brother of five sisters, Alverta (deceased) Gwendolyn, Charlene (deceased), Aroulia and Anita (Gregory). George was baptized in July of 1945 at the tender age of ten at Olivet Baptist Church, along with eldest sister, Alverta and older brother William.
George and his younger brother Frank played sandlot baseball during the years of 1952 to 1954 on a winning team called the Monarchs. George played second base. The team played at Woodhill Park, Gordon Park and Edgewater Park.
George graduated from East Technical High School in June of 1954. On October 3, 1954, George enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving for four years, from 1954 to 1958. George was stationed at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California. He was in the strategic Air Command as an aircraft hydraulic mechanic. He worked on the B-52 (Bomber) aircraft. His tenure ended with an Honorable discharge. In October of 1958, George was employed at the Navy Finance Center. His position there involved handling allotments of Navy personnel. In February of 1960, George began his career in the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk and worked at the Cleveland Air Mail Facility at the airport.
In 1962, George transferred from clerk to letter carrier at the East Cleveland branch and remained there until 1990. He was on the same mail route for a period of 24 years. George retired from the Post Office on October 3, 1990, at the age of 55. He served a total of 36 years in the Federal government.
George was baptized in the Catholic church in August 1965. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church (Communion of Saints) in Cleveland Heights. George was an usher at St. Ann’s for over 20 years.
George’s love of music spanned a variety of genres. He acquired a substantial collection of LPs and CDs, numbering into the thousands.
George loved to travel and visited various cities on his extensive vacations, including New York, Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. He also traveled to various cities in Florida, including Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In 1985, he went on a two-week tour to the
Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. In his travels, he also went on many Caribbean cruises. In 1978, George proudly purchased a Dutch Colonial home in Cleveland Heights.
Two dear friends lived with him in his home, Edward Patrick from 1978 to 1984 and later, John Flint from 1991 to 2013.
George never married but deeply loved and was extremely proud of all his family members. He was a frequent presence at family gatherings and especially enjoyed visiting his sister Alverta’s home.
George was a son, brother, and “Uncle George” to over seventy nieces and nephews. George leaves to cherish his memory: his sisters Gwendolyn, Aroulia, Anita (Gregory) and many family and friends.
George came into the Sunrise of his life on August 4, 1935. He entered into the Sunset of his life on his 90th birthday, August 4, 2025.
