Georgia L. Harris was born to the union of Sarah and William Jones Sr. on August 14, 1935, in Uniontown, AL. She was the second child born to their union behind her older Brother Willam Jr. Georgia was educated and graduated high school in Union Town school system.
Georgia moved to Cleveland, Oh as a young woman with her mother and brother. While living in Cleveland she met and married James Harris Sr, to their union was born one son James Harris Jr. in August of 1954. Her second son Jerry Harris was born 11 years after his older brother in December of 1966. Georgia was a mother through and through. She was loving and attentive to her sons while still making sure to keep to them in line with the help of her mother and brother.
Georgia worked many occupations throughout the years to provide for herself and her children. Her most meaningful and enjoyable job though was being an Elevator Operator at The Arcade in downtown Cleveland. Georgia would greet everyone with a smile and a good conversation on her many rides throughout the day. The one thing she loved most about her job was when she got special visits from her grandchildren at work. She would put them in her chair and let them help her operate the elevator. She started instilling a sense of pride in work in them from a very early age. During their visits she would allow them to operate the elevator. She would always be sure to take a break to walk them out when their shift was up, stopping at various shops throughout The Arcade to show off her “Grandbabies” as they collected treats and trinkets from various shop owners along the way. Georgia retired from her position at The Arcade in 1991.
Georgia enjoyed her life to the fullest. She was an avid card player throughout her life. She would join with other family members and friends to play on weekends. They would all get together to play, eat, drink, trash talk each other, and boy could she go with the best of them! She also loved to travel and hang out with her three best friends Allie, Nellie, and Fanny. They were the original “Golden Girls”. At any given time, they could all be found on Nellie’s front porch having one of their “Front Porch Chronical” moments; they would always have a good time when the 4 were together. Georgia also had a very special bond with her cousin Ray who was more her sister than a cousin. She also took much pride in being a grandmother and great-grandmother. Her grand children were her babies and if you messed with any of them you would have her to deal with. This position for her also extended beyond her family so much so that she even participated in the Adopt a Grandchild program through the Golden Age Senior Center. Through her work in this program, she became a surrogate grandmother to local children who had no grandparents.; providing them with the same love, support, and guidance as she did her own grandchildren.
