Mrs. Gloria Azerena Williams was born December 21, 1927, in Anniston, Alabama to David and Eleanor Gray. She was the first child of 11 children. She spent her early childhood in Alabama with her maternal grandmother. In 1933, her family moved to Kona, Kentucky for a better life. She attended Dunham High School in Jenkins, Kentucky. After completing her secondary education, she met and married Eugene Williams, Sr. in 1946. The couple moved to McRoberts, Kentucky to start their life and family. Gloria was married to Eugene for 42 years and from their union 13 children were born; eight girls and five boys. Gloria passed away on July 6, 2022, at Marymount Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Garfield Heights after a sudden illness. She was surrounded by loved ones as she took the journey home.
Gloria accepted the Lord at an early age. She was of the Baptist denomination. Gloria was a good wife and homemaker. She enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables. She made the most delicious pies and the best barbecue sauce. Gloria witnessed many events during her 94 1/2 years of life. She lived through the Jim Crow Era, The Great Depression, 17 United States Presidents and the Civil Rights Movement. She was excited when the Voting Act of 1965 was passed so she could exercise her right to vote.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Williams, Sr.; parents, David, and Elnora Gray; daughter, Sandra Motley; son, Jackie Ray Williams; grandson, Paul Norton, Jr.; six brothers, David, Herschel, Herman, James, Marion, and William; and two sisters, Gerline, and Marjorie.
Gloria Williams leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Eugene Williams Jr. of Kentucky, Jerry Williams of Kentucky, James Williams of Ohio, and Calvin Williams of Kentucky; seven daughters, Linda Lamb (Walter) of Kentucky, Elnora Austin of Ohio, Rosie Myles (Fred) of Ohio, Carolyn Williams of Ohio, Kathleen Williams of Ohio, Patricia Watkins (Robert) of S. Carolina, and Cynthia Greenwell of Ohio; one sister, Mary Jacqueline McKenzie (Roger) of Ohio; one brother, Lesley Nathenial Gray (Shirley) of Kentucky; 31 grandchildren; as well as a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
