Inez Theresa Stocks was born on August 24, 1918 in a small farmhouse in Aragon, Georgia, to Richard and Elizabeth Green. She was the fifth of seven children.
Growing up on a farm in rural Georgia, where her father was a sharecropper, the Green children were required to spend a lot of time feeding the chickens, pigs, and other farm animals. Planting cotton, picking the cotton, and completing household chores further instilled the true meaning of hard work into the entire Green family.
Inez married her childhood sweetheart, James R. Stocks Sr., on December 1, 1940. They moved to Ohio in 1944 as part of the “great migration”, where southerners moved north for better paying industrial jobs. She soon became a faithful member of St. John Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir and served on the usher board for many years. Inez loved her church and her church family loved her, naming her Woman of the Year in 2007. Mother Stocks touched the lives of all who met her and, cheerfully, she never met a stranger.
Inez and her husband James were married for sixty-two years. Their blessed union produced three sons: James Lamont (who died at birth), James Richard Jr. and Gregory Dolphus.
“Aunt Nez” was known for her warm heart and her excellent culinary skills. She always had a warm plate of food available for anyone who came to her house, no matter what time of the day or night they arrived. Mother Stocks also had a green thumb, often taking a leaf from a plant and nurturing it to grow into a tall stout tree.
During her 103rd year of life, Inez transitioned out of the body to be present with her Lord and Savior on April 20, 2021. Inez was preceded in death by her husband, James Stocks Sr. and her siblings, Ruth Stokes, Roy Green, Nora Fredrick, Catherine Poteete, Clem “Junior” Green and Naomi Croom.
“Grandmother” is survived by her children, James Stocks Jr. and Gregory Stocks; grandchildren, Michele Jones, Johnta Brinson, James Stocks III (Libby), Colette Jones, Amber Stocks and Tamara Stocks; great-grandchildren, G’Ante Leathers, Maquel Jones, John Averitt, Donovan Stocks, James “Ivey” Stocks, Michael Stocks, Joshua Jones, Jamera Jones, Jeremiah Jones, Jazmyne Jones, Jacobi Jones, Jaxyn Jones, LJ Stocks-Whitford, Spencer Stocks-Whitford, Tiago Lee, Taison Lee, Dorian “Deuce” Lee; great-great-grandchildren, Jaxson Gissentaner, Giovanni Gissentaner, and G’Onne Leathers; nephews and nieces included Donald, Barbara, Wendy, Bobby, Gloria, Pearl, Kay, Patricia, Joyce, Wayne, Carl, Yvonne, DeLoria, Pat and Claudette; at least twenty-five great nephews and nieces; and a host of great-great and great-great-great nephews and nieces and beyond.
