Rev. Isaac S. Gordon, loving father, grandfather, and uncle, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 2, 2024. Isaac was born January 19, 1934, in Akron to Isaac and Leola Gordon.
Isaac’s employment included Akron Children’s Hospital, Wadsworth Match Company, and Master Builders Cement. He developed a strong work ethic early in life and was inspired by his parents’ commitments to their jobs and to bettering the community.
Learning from the older generation, Isaac became an avid community volunteer. Isaac Gordon held membership in the NAACP, Akron Urban League, and many local civic organizations. He wrote a weekly column for The Reporter Newspaper on the importance of civil and equal rights. He made local news himself when he led a peaceful protest against Akron Children’s Hospital for its job discrimination practices. This resulted in the hospital’s change in its hiring process to include diversity and equal opportunity for all job applicants.
Isaac was a man of God. He knew the Bible from cover to cover. His calling to spread the Word led him to attend Berean Bible Institute where he earned a Bachelor of Ministry Degree. Isaac served as assistant minister and guest minister for many churches in the Akron area, until he founded a church of his own, The Northern Disciples of Christ. After retiring from the ministry, Isaac and his late wife, Betty, were members of The House of The Lord.
Isaac enjoyed working around the house, reading theological books, journaling, and of course, the Cleveland Browns. He looked forward to the NFL season and was ready every Sunday with a Rizzi’s chicken snack and Orange Crush soda to watch the game. He was the number one Browns fan.
Isaac was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Betty; his sister, Gloria Gordon; and his niece, Debra Harrison.
Left to cherish his memory are daughters, April (Mark) Jefferson and Misty (Eric) Wheeler; son, Isaac Joseph Gordon (Michael); grandson, Miles Wheeler; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
