James Arthur Boyd, lovingly known as “PeeWee” to his family and “Jim” to his friends, passed away on February 18, 2026, at the age of 80.
Born on September 2, 1945, in Stanton, Tennessee, to the late Martro Boyd and Ezell Boyd, James was raised in a close-knit community grounded in faith and family. At a young age, he united with Douglas CME Church, where he participated in youth fellowship and formed friendships that helped shape his early years. He attended Douglas High School, where he received both traditional academic instruction and hands-on shop training, developing practical skills and an appreciation for working with his hands.
In 1965, seeking opportunity and determined to build his own path, James relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. It was there that he built his life, career, and lasting friendships.
Jim lived a life defined by hard work, laughter, and deep devotion to his family. He was straight-forward, genuine, and super funny – a true old-school man who believed in showing up, speaking plainly, and doing what he said he would do. He had a gift for storytelling and rarely missed a chance to share a joke. Many times, he laughed as he told his stories – often cracking himself up before anyone else had the chance. His laughter was genuine and contagious, and it became one of the many things those who loved him will remember most.
He dedicated many years of loyal service to The Judson-Brooks Company, later acquired by Bowne, where he built not only a career but lifelong friendships. In 1990, he briefly pursued business ownership, purchasing a Dairymart franchise. After about a year, he chose to return to Judson-Brooks – a reflection of both his loyalty and the deep relationships he valued there. He later continued his strong work ethic at Sam’s Club, working until his retirement at the age of 75.
On May 25, 1973, he married Lenita Walker, and they remained married for 25 years. Though their marriage later ended, they remained friends for the rest of his life. Together, they were the parents of two daughters, Dana Williams and Danielle Boyd. Danielle, who passed away at birth, preceded him in death.
Family was the center of his world. He leaves behind his daughter, Dana Williams; his beloved grandchildren, Jonathan and Jada, who affectionately called him Papa; his sister, Winnie Brown of Atlanta, Georgia; his sister, Marie Middlebrooks of Atlanta, Georgia; and his brother, Herbert “Nick” Boyd of Chicago, Illinois. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends. He spent many days caring for his grandchildren after school, taking his role as Papa seriously and cherishing the time he spent with them. He was dependable to his core – if he told you he would be somewhere or do something, you could always count on him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martro Boyd and Ezell Boyd; his brothers, John Gaston Boyd and William “Bill” Taylor; and his sister, Aliceteen Greer.
James Arthur Boyd will be remembered for his stories, his laughter, his love of card games and old westerns, and his steady presence in the lives of those he loved. He was, in every sense, a true old-school man – straight-forward, dependable, genuine, and deeply devoted to his family. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
