James Benton Jr. was born on September 3, 1936, in Buffalo, New York to the late Rev. James Benton Sr. and Maggie Benton. At an early age, James accepted Christ at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Buffalo, New York under his father and Pastor, the late Reverend James Benton Sr. He was educated in the Buffalo public school system. Following High School on July 13, 1954, he enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 18 and served a four-year term before being released with an honorable discharge. James’ military teachings were displayed daily. He was respectful, structured, and known for keeping himself groomed and presentably dressed. In his early adulthood, James moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked as a crane operator for J&L Steel, now known as LTV Steel. James provided over 40 years of dedicated service. He married Estella, the love of his life on June 22, 1966. They were wonderful parents to Maurice, Angela, and Maria.
James was a devout man who loved the Lord wholeheartedly. He continued his Christian experience, joining Avon Baptist Church in November 1967 under the leadership of Pastor Thomas E. Chapman. He was a faithful servant in many areas of the church. Upon retirement, he devoted his time to teaching Sunday school, serving on the Deacon Board, singing in the men’s choir, and managing the church’s audio equipment. He would greet you in the parking lot during weekly meetings and services for many years as he assisted in watching over the church grounds. His service continued as he volunteered at the church’s Hunger Center helping those in the community.
James loved life and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed cooking, reading, music, and fishing. He was known for grilling at church picnics, and his delicious biscuits and salmon croquettes at special church breakfasts became a big hit with many. He was an avid reader. You could always catch him reading, whether it was his Sunday school book, newspaper, or magazine. He had a thirst for knowledge. James also shared a love of music, especially jazz and gospel. He developed an extensive collection over the years. Fishing was his way of relaxing and taking time for himself with nature and God. He was always proud of the fish he caught.
In his final years, James Benton Jr. would delight his family each day by singing his favorite song “Just Another Day That the Lord Has Kept Me.” James answered the call of his Heavenly Father peacefully in his sleep on August 20, 2024. James is preceded in death by his wife Estella Benton, son Maurice Benton, parents, Reverend James Benton Sr. and Maggie Benton: and sisters Julia Harrison, Ruby Grandberry (Charles Grandberry), Dorothy Franklin, and Rosetta Benton Jackson.
