God called “James Lewis to report to duty” on June 30, 2025. Destination: Heaven, where he would meet his parents Nepoleon Lewis and Blanche Roberts (Claude Sr). The purpose of this meeting was not just a reunion, but for a special assignment only Jim could fulfill. He arrived, standing tall and proud as he always did, much like when he first answered the call to serve his country as a U.S. Marine. Jim carried that spirit of dedication and readiness throughout his life, always prepared to face whatever came next, with a quiet strength that made his family feel secure.
James “Jim” Nelson Lewis, 71, of Cleveland, Ohio, was born on August 21, 1953.
Jim was a proud graduate of East Technical High School. After his service in the United States Marine Corps, he pursued his passion for electrical work, attending technical school and becoming a skilled Journeyman Electrician. He furthered his expertise, proudly achieving the title of Master Electrician.
Jim dedicated his life to God and in 1976 he became the Vice President of the Utopian Society of Spiritual Research. He was also a devoted member of Second Zion Spiritual Temple Church, attending alongside his former wife, LaVern Lewis. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life.
A true sports enthusiast, Jim loved basketball, baseball, and football. His unwavering loyalty to the Cleveland Browns was legendary, and he was a dedicated season ticket holder for many years, cheering on his team through thick and thin.
Above all, Jim cherished his family. He was the heart of many festive gatherings, especially his famous Christmas parties, where he would ensure there was an abundance of food and drinks for everyone. His nieces, nephews, and children will forever fondly recall the times he’d “over-imbibe” just enough to transform into Santa himself, generously handing out money to all the children—a truly loving and memorable tradition that brought so much joy.
Jim leaves to cherish his memories and love to his children, Janice and Latasha (daughters with the late LaVern Lewis), James (Mary) (mother Monica), and Josephine (Mother Helen), and bonus son, Anthony. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Jahnovia (James), Akira, Curtis, and Cassidy, and great-grandchildren Javon, Jahnayia, and Jalayiah. Maternal siblings Claude Jr. (Terri), Dianne, Earnest (Linda) along with a host of paternal siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins who will deeply miss him.
