Janet L. Mitchell transitioned to be home with the Lord on August 31st, 2025. Janet was born on July 28th, 1949, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky to Elizabeth A. Galbreath and Henry Woodard. In her younger years, she lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Chicago, Illinois, and Cleveland, Ohio, but she made Akron, Ohio her home until God called her to rest in His arms.
Janet was one of the first women to graduate from East Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended the University of Akron and achieved her degree in Engineering. While at the University of Akron, she met and married Ronald E. Mitchell, Sr., in 1970, and they were married for 39 years until his untimely passing in December 2009. She started working at the United States Postal Service in 1976 and worked for 30 years which included Postmasters positions in Lodi, Barberton, and Medina, Ohio, along with retiring as the Manager of the Akron South Arlington Station in 2006. Janet loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, most importantly. She enjoyed traveling, her trips to the casino in Ohio, West Virginia, Las Vegas, and Arizona. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, family, and friends. Janet was smart, savvy, classy and the most generous, kindest soul to everyone.
Janet preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Galbreath, father, Henry Woodard, husband, Ronald E. Mitchell Sr., and sister, Anita. She leaves to mourn her children, son, Ronald E. Mitchell Jr. (Starlet), and daughter, Shelli Mitchell, stepson, Cedric (Tracy) Anthony. Best friend, Channie Jones, Grandchildren, Demetrius Proctor II, Davin Proctor, Don Mitchell, Tia Mitchell and Special Cousins, Linda Reid, Bralin Robinson, Lennox Spencer, and Shayla (Clarence) Crawford, along with a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Janet will be forever in our hearts.
Services will occur at Stewart and Calhoun Funeral Home on Friday, September 19th, 2025, at 1:00 PM.
The burial will take place at Lakewood Cemetery.
