Jesse L. Smith II was born on October 26, 1942, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to the late Angie Culpepper and Jesse L. Smith Sr. He was the youngest of five children and was preceded in death by his siblings: Dorothy, Louise, Retha, and Willie.
Jesse attended Central Middle School and later graduated from John Hay High School. He also completed some college coursework in his pursuit of further education. From a young age, Jesse showed determination, resilience, and a strong work ethic that would follow him throughout his life.
He was first married to Carolyn, with whom he shared two children, Nicole and Jesse III. His beloved daughter, Nicole, and his first wife, Carolyn, both preceded him in death. In 1991, Jesse married Lula Smith, and together they built a beautiful life, blending their families and welcoming bonus children into their home. Jesse and Lula shared 34 years of love, partnership, and faith.
Jesse had a long and dedicated career, working for East Ohio Gas Company as a mechanic for more than 30 years. He also held positions at Children’s Palace, where he assisted with stock and cleaning until the store closed, and later with a cleaning company in Beachwood, Ohio. Known for his strong work ethic, Jesse often held multiple jobs and remained busy, providing for his family.
Outside of his professional life, Jesse enjoyed working on cars and was always eager to advise others about their vehicles. He also loved technology and embraced learning new things. Above all, the church was his second home, and in many ways, his first. Jesse was a faithful member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, where he served with devotion as a Deacon for more than 15 years. His service to God and his church community was a central part of his life and legacy.
Jesse leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 34 years, Lula Smith; his sons, Jesse Smith III (Carmen), DeLonte (Natalie), and his bonus children; Gwendolyn (Mark), Geraldine (Kenneth), Roosevelt Jr. (La Shona), and Kim (Cyril). He also leaves behind thirty grandchildren, forty-eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a host of nieces and nephews, extended family members, church family, and friends who will miss his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering faith.
Jesse’s life was defined by his love for God, his family, his work, and his community. Though he has departed this earthly life, his legacy of service, faith, and love will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
