Johnny Johnson was born September 23, 1945, in Sumter County, South Carolina to Samuel Johnson Sr. and Chanie Johnson. Both preceded him in death. He was the eighth of eight children.
Johnny became a Christian at a very young age at the Mayesville, South Carolina Presbyterian Church, here he worshipped with his family.
He was united in Holy Matrimony to Maxine Ford on July 31, 1971.
Johnny was a devoted husband, and father, as well as an excellent provider. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, at which time he was Honorably Discharged. Johnny relocated to Clairton, Pennsylvania and resided with his sister, Ella Mae Harper. He was employed for several months at the “Eat N Park” Restaurant. Johnny was not satisfied with his employment there and sought employment elsewhere. He heard that the U.S. Steel Clairton Works was hiring. He received a position at the Clairton Works of U.S. Steel. Johnny was not happy at the steel mill and had heard through a friend that Greyhound was hiring. His life-long dream of being a bus driver had begun to take shape.
Johnny went with a friend to apply for a position as Bus Driver for Greyhound. He had been accepted as a Greyhound Bus Driver! After his training with Greyhound, and the rumors of layoffs in Pittsburgh, he decided to relocate to Cleveland, Ohio. There, in Cleveland, he resided for a short time with his Uncle Roland and Aunt Naomi Boggs.
Sometime later, there was dissention in the ranks at Greyhound. Dissatisfaction resulted in a strike at Greyhound. Many of the drivers sought employment elsewhere. It was at this time that Johnny was hired by Cleveland Southeastern Trails. He remained there for about three years. A friend who was employed by the Veterans Administration said the VA was looking for drivers. Once again, his mild manners won them over. He was then employed by the VA. He retired from the VA with ten years of service.
Johnny leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife, Maxine, of 54 years, a daughter Ta-Tanisha (Darron) who preceded him in death, one son Damien (Tiffany), and a sister, Ella Mae Harper. Johnny has three grandchildren Anaya, Carter, and Cooper. His brothers all preceded him in death; namely, Joe, Sam, Curdell, Jack, Sidney, and Stanford. He leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
