JONATHAN LAMONT PERRY was born September 4,1987 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the first born to the late Bishop Mark Lamont Perry and Mother Lynn Lattimore Perry. He graduated from Garfield Heights High School, then attended Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.
His maternal grandmother Pastor Ruth M. Lattimore presented him for christening by Bishop Gordon Vaughn of Western Pennsylvania Ecclesiastic Church of God in Christ in Pittsburgh PA and paternal grandmother, Mother Jonelle Perry, presented him for christening by the late Mother Elsie Shaw. After accepting Christ as his Savior at a young age, he was baptized in water by Bishop Warren Elijah Miller at Williams Temple C.O.G.I.C. during a youth service.
Jonathan grew to be a very active, inquisitive, and outgoing child. It was evident he was gifted with an ear and talent for music. His grandmother purchased his first set of drums when he was a toddler. Jonathan was affectionately called “Jon.”
Jonathan’s true anointing was in music. God anointed Jonathan first as a percussionist. He LOVED to play the drums in church. He started playing as a youngster in his father’s church Williams Chapel C.O.G.I.C. on E.93rd, Cleveland, OH and then at Williams Temple C.O.G.I.C. where Bishop Miller gave him the permission to play initially during devotional services. Jonathan’s skill advanced as he observed skilled percussionists, and he played for the youth and adult choirs. Then Jonathan became interested in playing the organ. Bro. Steve Golden started instructing him on the organ. Jonathan was blessed with an ear for music, and he quickly advanced in playing and assisting in backing the preached Word of God! He enjoyed sharing and “shedding” with local musicians, even at a young age with Bro. Steve Golden, Antonio Scott, Jermaine Jackson, and others. They would spend hours at various locations; but mainly Williams Chapel “shedding” playing their music and advancing their skill with each other. He would always say his playing was his worship to God. He never liked a “dead/dry” service. He always wanted the worship to be passionate and lively in appreciation to God for all that God had done. After his grandfather’s and father’s demise, Jonathan continued serving at Cathedral C.O.G.I.C. as percussionist and organist. Jon’s gift allowed him to meet well-known gifted individuals both locally and nationally.
Jonathan worked in various businesses in his lifetime, while cutting the hair of many of his family and friends. But his main goal was to establish his own business called Royalty Cleaning, Inc. He could not continue to work it due to his failing health. He did work with his father, the late Bishop Mark Perry, with his MLP Fashions. His goal was to take care of his family. He was a kind, generous, loyal, and dedicated man.
Jonathan had the biggest smile and hugs. He also was known for smelling good. People would always ask him “what’ s that fragrance you’re wearing!” He would flash that big smile; but never tell them because it was never one fragrance. He was a master of mixing oils together to suite his fancy. He would often ask his mother for her opinion.
Jonathan loved God and knew God was watching over him and saw his pain. God’s grace and mercy brought him through every obstacle. He appreciated the prayers of the Saints for him.
There have been many memorable moments in Jonathan’s life. The most recent memorable event was the birth of his niece, Dakota MaeLynn Griffin. She brought so much laughter and joy to him at a time when he and his family were suffering much pain.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Brother Joseph and Pastor Ruth Lattimore, paternal grandparents Bishop Floyd and Mother Jonelle Perry, his uncle Brother Joseph Lattimore, Jr, and his father Bishop Mark L. Perry. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother, Mother Lynn Lattimore Perry, loving sisters Amber L. Perry of Cleveland OH and Tamika Perry Womack of Fort Walton Beach, FLA; dear aunts Dr. Lanelle Perry, Mabel Cloud, Cleveland, OH, Laura Coleman, Alliance, OH, Charlette Kirksey Thurman (Dennis), Alliance, OH, Faye Foreman of Florida; uncles Courtney Perry, Walter Kirksey Mohammed (Ella) of Cleveland, OH, and Grover Kirksey (Nadine) of Alliance, OH, nieces Adria D. Womack, Abrielle Womack, and Dakota MaeLynn Griffin; nephews Delyn, Demetri, and Emmanuel Womack, great nephew Ezekiel Womack, his girlfriend, Sharelle McMillion, who played a special part in his life, along with a host of cousins, other family members and friends. Jon had so many special, close friends from the church, and outside the church, which are too many to mention.
