Superintendent, Dr. Joseph Morgan Jr., 80, departed this life on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at his residence with his beloved sister and wife, First Lady Betty R. Morgan, by his side.
Superintendent Morgan was born February 13, 1944, in Colquitt, Georgia, the son of Joseph Morgan Sr. and Missionary Gracie (Jones) Linton. As a young man, he quickly became known for his impeccable work ethic, toughness, and punctuality.
In the Fall of 1964, Superintendent Joseph Morgan Jr. ventured to Canton, Ohio along with his then wife and eventual mother of eight children, Mother Roxie Morgan.
On June 30, 1984, Superintendent Morgan became Pastor of First Church of God In Christ (and remained so until his death). During his tenure as Pastor, Superintendent Morgan was celebrated for the work he did to revive and advance the State Sunday School Department of the Ohio Northwest Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.
In 2004, he married First Lady Betty Morgan. Their household has been brightened by their fur son, and Superintendent Morgan’s constant companion, Cameron.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Morgan Sr., who passed away in his childhood; his stepfather and spiritual mentor, the honorable Pastor Elzie Linton; his beloved mother, Grace Linton; his brother Andrew Morgan; and his grandson, Minister Travis Phillips.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife and helpmate, Lady Betty R. Morgan; his children Debra (Vincent) Watts of Canton, Ohio, Janice (James) Thompson of Dayton, Ohio, Joseph (Betty) Morgan III, of Miramar, Florida, Veronica (George) Harmon, Melvin (Stacie) Morgan Sr., David Morgan, Amanda (George) Ouma, Jennifer (Anthony) Walker, and Brittany (Larry) Hendricks, all of Canton, Ohio; three brothers Robert “Gator” (Renee) Morgan, James (Patsy) Chester, Herbert (Lucinda) Greene and his only beloved sister Leona “Nina” Chester all of Canton, Ohio; and thirty-two grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and his fur son, Cameron. Additionally, to mourn his memory, a host of nieces and nephews, special daughters and sons, mentees, First COGIC, Truevine District, Ohio Northwest Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, and the Canton, Ohio community.
Pastor, Dr. Joseph Morgan Jr., you will forever be one of the greatest of all time! Over his forty years as Pastor, there are many milestones we could recount. However, Pastor Morgan stated just one accomplishment as his proudest endeavor: Over the years, he brought many amazing people together for one common goal, to grow and equip God’s kingdom in love.
