Lawrence James (Larry) was born to the union of Gilbert and Ora Lee James on May 24, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the beloved and youngest son of six siblings. Having two younger sisters, Larry assumed the protective role, always ensuring his sisters were safe. Larry was very family oriented, helping to organize the annual James family reunions in his hometown with the support of his wife, Sharon. Larry had an assertive yet humble disposition. His demeanor was reserved, and many would even say it was quiet; he relished in those quiet moments, always protecting his peace of mind. Although he wasn’t very outspoken, he was an avid listener and had the memory of an elephant, which made anyone he encountered, someone he remembered. Larry preferred to converse with you beyond the surface on various topics, in sports (he dreamed of challenging Stephen A. Smith) as well as the current events, religion, and how it impacts us, he also loved classic and modern automobiles!
Lawrence, affectionately known as Sudi, by close friends and family was known for his impeccable style. You wouldn’t catch him dressed without some fresh sneakers or those wingtip patent leather shoes, always starched and pressed – the man dressed to impress. He attended John Adams High school, where he excelled in math and science. He developed a love and passion for sports, basketball, football, baseball, and racket ball. Lawrence led a very active life and promoted physical training. Sudi would keep a gym bag in his trunk ready for a pickup game at Woodhill Park or a swim at Stella Walsh. After long days of work and playing racket ball, he was dedicated to going to the steam room as a part of his daily routine.
After graduation, Lawrence attended The University of Akron, earning his bachelor’s degree in Science Education. From then on, he began his career with Cleveland Public Schools. For over 30 years, he was devoted to his students, teaching fifth and sixth grade at Daniel E. Morgan, where he later retired in 2012. Lawrence was known by his students for being firm, yet he became a mentor and father figure to many of his students and his family members, always encouraging and promoting the importance of education.
On December 9, 1988, Larry married the love of his life, “his” Sharon. They enjoyed life together, which included taking numerous vacations. Larry was faithful and fully devoted to Sharon, loving her unconditionally. From this union, two children were born, Brittany and Lawrence James ll, which he affectionately named, “Boy Boy.” Larry was also the proud father of Liyana and Brandon. He loved his family and was dedicated to making sure their needs and wants were satisfied. He was a quintessential provider. Larry was very supportive of Sharon as she raised and reared their children to love Jehovah God, and as they moved forward in their service to God. In 2019, Lawrence became curious as to what some of his children and wife were learning and decided to have a personal home Bible discussion. Together they built a secure and loving household for their entire family.
A family that was unfortunately altered too soon with the passing of his son which led to his broken heart on Friday, October 14, 2022 and Lawrence fell asleep in death. His parents, Gilbert and Ora; son, Lawrence; siblings, Harold, Herbert, Gilbert Jr., and Charlene; aunts, Mahalia, Liliar, and Ida; all preceded him in death but were not forgotten.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Sharon James; Daughters Liyana and Brittany (Maurice); stepson, Brandon; sister, Sherrian; aunt, Irene; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
