Mamie Jean Mitchell was born on June 7, 1945, in Starkville, Mississippi, to Olivia Leandrine (Donaldson) Mitchell-Gibson and Edgar Allen Mitchell, Sr. In 1952, around the age of seven, Mamie moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she resided for the next 70 years.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, step-father Jimmy Lee Gibson, brother Charles Gibson, nephew Eleke Gibson, and great-nephew Miguel Mitchell.
Mamie was intellectually gifted, a scholar who consistently received high honors. She attended Bolton Elementary School, Addison Jr. High, and John Hay High School. She continued on to college and earned an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and ultimately a Juris Doctorate while working full-time and attending school. Not surprisingly, Mamie had already passed the state of Ohio Bar examination prior to graduating from law school Summa cum Laude.
Mamie had a strong love for community (when working at BP America she was in Community Relations) so it’s no surprise her career journey would lead to the Cleveland City Council as an advocate for the people of Ward 6.
In 2017, Mamie had to step away from the civic duties she loved due to illness. The illness was dementia, which she unfortunately succumbed to on Friday, March 17, 2023. However, she had an active life filled with fun and love during her battle.
Mamie wasn’t placed in a facility nor laid up and forgotten about. She traveled with family on cruises, trips to St. Thomas, reunions, and other fun places including Las Vegas. Her family kept her on the go and engaged in activities. She “lived” through dementia, and was home with loved ones until she went to hospice a couple of days prior to taking her final breath.
A life well-lived and a woman well-loved, Mamie leaves behind to cherish her memories: Her only child, son Thomas/Tom Tom Mitchell; Grandchildren: Thomas Mitchell/LA, Damon Merritt, Charlicia Mitchell/CJ, Jordan Mitchell-Hagler; Great Grandchildren: Leandre Mitchell, Savanaa Mitchell; Brothers: Edgar Mitchell (Gloria), Donaldson Gibson (Marshall), Jimmy Gibson, Willie Gibson; her nephew/son she helped raise, Dean Gibson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, colleagues, and constituents.
