Marie Louise Grant, affectionately known as Marie Lou, Sister Grant and Granny, transitioned peacefully on August 31, 2024, at Cleveland Clinic—Hillcrest Hospital, surrounded by her devoted children. True to her character, she took her final breaths in her own time, defying the expectations of doctors and medical personnel, passing on her beloved Sabbath Day of rest. She was 84 years old. Marie Lou took great pride in her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. Their joys were her joys and their successes were her successes. In them she instilled the value of hard work, of giving back to one’s community, of always treating others with dignity, love, and respect, regardless of background or station, and using your voice to speak up for what you believe in. She was unafraid to speak her mind, and did so with equal parts eloquence, wisdom, passion, and fire. Marie Lou leaned heavily on God throughout her life and lived out the call of Leviticus 19:18, which admonishes God’s people to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” She loved fiercely—her family, her church, the youth, and anyone who was fortunate enough to be taken under her wing.
