Ms. Mary Elizabeth Pope was born on August 10, 1947, in Welch, West Virginia, to the late George Douglas and Ruth Othelia Pope. She transitioned to eternal rest on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
Mary attended Court Street United Methodist Church and McDowell County Schools. She graduated Valedictorian from Welch Dumbar Junior High School in 1962 and Kimball Senior High School in 1965. Of her many accomplishments, she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in degree in Psychology from West Virginia University in 1969 and Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University in 1979. She was employed by the Cuyahoga County Department of Human Services and “Harambee: Services to Children and Families.” In 2005, she retired from Applewood Centers, Inc. after more than 20 years of dedicated work in Social Services. In addition, she was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Chance Christopher Earl Pope, her brother Larry S. Pope, and her Godmother, R. J. Kendall.
Left to cherish her memories are her grandchildren: Alfred “Tre” Harper III, Mount Pleasant, Michigan, Dominique Lewis, Chancis Pope, Chance C.E. Pope II., and Khloe Pope, great-grandson Chance Pope III all of Cleveland, Ohio, her brother George D. Pope Jr. of Harvey De Grace, Maryland, Sisters Ruth P. (Michael) Hairston of Havaco, West Virginia, Ida Pope of Willow Springs, North Carolina and Pamala P. Robinson of Charleston, West Virginia, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
