Michael Patterson was born on August 21, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the youngest of three children. On May 5, 2023, Michael left this world after a brave battle with several illnesses. He is reunited with his parents, Velvielee
Patterson and John Artis; siblings, Sandra “Cookie” and Ronald “Ronnie”
Patterson who preceded him in death.
Mike served in the United States Army and shared many stories about his adventures as a young black man serving in the Vietnam War during the height of the civil rights movement. Upon his return from duty, he regained employment with Reynolds’s Moving Company where he would faithfully work and retire after 40 years of exhausting, back-breaking work. He was proud of his Kinsman Rd roots and talked frequently about Mt. Pleasant BBQ, The Kinsman Grill, The Shrimp Boat, and other well-known spots in the neighborhood.
Mike was known for walking great distances to reach his destination, however, one day in 1995, he met Dorothy (Woods) on an RTA bus. He approached her, asked her name, then proudly proclaimed, “My name is Mike and I have a job!” She soon became his best friend, wife, and companion for life. Mike refused to allow an opportunity to pass without declaring how much her care, and especially, her cooking meant to him. He would often brag about her homemaking skills and the number of years they were married. There was never any doubt how much he loved their life together.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Mike. He loved quiet days and evenings watching westerns and movies from his extensive movie collection. He had an uncanny ability to find happiness in his daily activities and his pleasant personality was contagious to everyone he met.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; daughters; Jennifer, Michelle, and Andrea; son, Michael “Mikey”. Fourteen grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. First cousins, Barbara Workman and Wallace Holmes. “Uncle Mike” also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who will miss his sense of humor, his laughter, and his larger-than-life personality.
