Myrtle Mae Lewis, affectionately known as Myrt, was born in Beckley, West Virginia on April 11, 1936 to the parents of Kermit R. Bradshaw, Sr. and Mabel Gertrude (Tolar) Bradshaw. The Lord cradled her in His arms for rest on October 26, 2017.
Myrtle graduated from East High School in 1954 and went on to be one of the first African Americans hired at the Akron Board of Education. Myrtle met and married Timothy Lewis from Selma, Alabama, and three children were born to this union—Monicca Lynnette Lewis, Kevin Timmone Lewis, and Arnita Maxine Lewis. The couple was a member of the choir at the Greater Bethel Baptist Church. Myrtle was later employed by Summit County Children Services Board and was a dedicated employee for over 30 years.
Myrtle became a widow at the young age of 49 and volunteered several years of service as the secretary of Bethel Baptist Church. She received the Dedicated Christian Service Award in 1988. Prior to the death of her husband, she became an Eastern Star. She took pride in her yard and on several occasions won the Neighborhood Beautification Award.
Although Myrtle experienced hardships such as losing her husband in 1985, son Kevin in 1988, and was eventually diagnosed with a chronic illness, she remained positive and continued to enjoy life. She loved to tease and laugh with her family and grandchildren—Everett, Merissa, Miranda, Matthew, and EJ. She changed any frown into a smile. In her quiet time, she enjoyed watching sports, LeBron James and intellectually critiqued politics.
Myrtle had a beautiful heart and disposition. Her smile, class and style lit up any room. She genuinely loved everyone she knew, and never met a stranger. Myrtle would help anyone in need.
