Nelcena “Nel” Mays was born on October 8, 1953, to the late Freeman Sr. and Rosemary Mays. The fourth of seven children, she was a natural nurturer from a young age. She was often looked to for guidance, a role she embraced with grace and patience. Nelcena’s bond with both her family and chosen family was deep and unwavering, as she cared for many at different times in her life with steadfast devotion.
She committed her life to Christ at an early age and was a proud, active member of Providence Baptist Church, laying the foundation for a deep and abiding faith that guided her throughout her life. In 1974, she married Robert Pettus Jr., and from their union, they were blessed with two sons who were the light of her life, Desmond Sr. and Brandon, who she affectionately called Darnell.
Nel attended John Hay High School, graduating in 1972. Guided by a deep commitment to serving others, she devoted her life to public service, including the creation of her home-based daycare, The Bee Happy Family Daycare, where she provided accessible and affordable childcare to families in need. In 2007, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management from Hiram College. She later continued her service at the federal building in downtown Cleveland before retiring in 2019.
Known for her generous spirit, Nel gave of herself freely and without hesitation. She extended herself to everyone around her—especially her family—offering her home, time, energy, and love without ever expecting anything in return. Whether it was a colleague in need, a friend navigating a difficult season, or a loved one facing life’s challenges, she showed up with understanding and a willing heart. Her selflessness wasn’t an occasional act but a way of life—a quiet, steady, and powerful presence that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Beyond her generosity and strength, Nel was the life of the party. Her magnetic personality and sense of humor lit up every room, and her full-bodied, unmistakable laugh had a way of drawing people in and lifting spirits. She had a gift for turning ordinary moments into cherished memories.
She took great pleasure in the little things that made everyday life sweeter. With an undeniable sweet tooth, she enjoyed everything from cakes and pastries to her favorite candies. She also loved to watch the Home Shopping Network and QVC, which could be found playing on her TV at almost any time of day. Discovering new products, talking excitedly about her finds, and surprising loved ones with thoughtful gifts brought her genuine happiness.
She was a proud, loving, and fun grandmother to Desmond Jr. (“Bookie”), Autumn (“Sweetie”), and Landon (“Lan Man”). Desmond affectionately called her “Ma-Ma,” while Autumn and Landon lovingly called her “Grandma Tutu.” Autumn and Landon will always cherish the sleepovers, the playful moments and the joy of just being silly and present with their grandma. Every moment with her was filled with laughter, love, and a sense of magic only she could create. Her heart expanded even more with the arrival of her great-grandson, Iman.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Desmond Pettus Sr., and oldest brother, Freeman Mays Jr.
Nelcena’s memory will live on in the hearts of her adored son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Maya Pettus; dear siblings Helen (Charles), Bruce, Jeff (Rhonda), Anthony (Lena), and Maurice (Marcia); cherished grandchildren, great-grandchild, cousins, nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and close friends.
