Sunrise-June 17, 1926- Sunset January 1, 2021
A 75-year member of Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church, 80 year founding member of the Sorrels Social Club. She was a Federal Employee for 64 years retiring as a supervisor of the Social Security Administration. Then began a career with Third Federal Savings and Loan and retired at the age of 88 with 16 years of service.
Pauline, leave to mourn her brother James A. Wright Jr., brother-in-law, Robert Holcomb and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pauline Moore Scott was born on June 17, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio to Artis Jennings and James Wright Sr.
Pauline loved serving and worshiping the Lord and was baptized in 1938 at the age of 12 by the late Rev. J. R. Plummer, Pastor of the Triedstone Baptist Church. She later followed him and became a charter member of The Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church in 1946, where she remained a faithful and active member for 75 years, under the leadership of Rev. J.R. Plummer, Rev. Henry Payden and currently Rev. Dr. E.T. Caviness. Pauline served in many capacities including but not limited to the following; youth Sunday school teacher, member of the Gill Girls, youth choir, usher board, The Sanctuary Choir, The Lydia Circle, The Progressive League, 1979 Chairperson for Women’s Day, 1st Runner Up Missionary Queen in 1982, Christian Woman of the Year in 1985 and a member of the Deaconess Board!
Pauline, graduated from John Hay High School in June of 1944. Over the years she took several courses at Cleveland Community College.
Pauline had a strong work ethic starting her first job at 14 years old. In 1944, two days after her 18th birthday, she started working for the United States Navy, although it was her desire to join the W.A.C. (Women’s Army Corp.). In 1951 she left the Navy and began her career for the Social Security Administration and remained there until 1995. Pauline retired as a supervisor with 44 years of service and a total of 69 years with United States Government. Soon after retiring from Social Security she returned to work part-time at various retail stores. She was not done yet, in 1998 she began a new career at Third Federal Savings and Loan and worked there retiring again after 16 years.
Pauline was a founding member of the Sorrels Social Club in 1946, a member of National Advancement of Colored People, (N.A.A.C.P.) , the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (S.C.L.A.) and the International Toastmistress.
She married David Scott Jr. on March 7, 1955. She loved God the most, but second was her family! She cared deeply for her mother and stood by her side, often making selfless decisions to do so. Pauline assisted both lovingly and financially helping to raise her sisters, Colleen, Eula and Artis until they graduated school and became independent. She cared for her sister Eula until she passed in 1997
Pauline left no child in our family behind and was the great gap filler. She also had a special relationship with her nephew, Reginald. She didn’t give birth to any but she mothered many! She was second parent to her niece, Detra and sole parent of Colleen. She made no excuses for the care she gave children in her family. She felt it was her responsibility and took it seriously. Her great-nieces, Pauline and Dihanna Holcomb were also beneficiaries of the great devotion and love she had for family. We were all her babies, even as adults! That included her brother, James O.C. and his children, Gloria, Paul, Ethel, Storme, James, Pauline, Taylor, Brenda and Michael, who resided in Buffalo, New York. Pauline adored her great great-niece, Nala who called her Gi-Gi and even played with her the day after Christmas. She was also devoted to the care for the needs of her brother, James Anthony until her passing. Pauline always said, “I didn’t have any children, but I have a whole lot of nieces and nephews.”
After, a diagnosis of cancer in 2010 and short period in hospice, God dispatched an angel on January 1, 2021 at 7:40 p.m. to pick her up and take her to the place that was prepared especially for her.
Pauline was preceded in death by her mother, Artis Mclaughlin; father, James Wright Sr.; sisters, Colleen, Grace Anne and Eula Belle Moore, Artis Jean Holcomb; brother, James O.C. Smith and niece, Colleen Evans.
Pauline leaves to mourn one brother, James A. Wright Jr.; brother-in-law, Robert Holcomb and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, great and small!
