Robert Lee Beamon “Bob” was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 17, 1927 to Pless and Viola Beamon. He attended the Memphis City Schools and worked for a local drug store and later the Sears and Roebuck Company. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee
Bob followed his eldest brother’s footsteps and moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1944, seeking a better quality of life. He worked in a number of war plants until he was drafted into World War II. He graciously served his country in the United States Army from 1945 -1947. Upon his return to Cleveland, he returned to work in the manufacturing industry, later becoming employed at the Ford Motor Company Stamping Plant in Walton Hills, Ohio for almost 33 years.
Bob’s signature was known by everyone, to enjoy smoking cigars. Which in later years, due to safety issues was encouraged to STOP SMOKING… *some of you were probably responsible for sneaking and purchasing him a cigar or two. He often would say “Nita can’t stop me”. It was a constant battle of wits. Driving became an issue and his physician advised his daughter Nita, to “DISARM THE VEHICLE” after that he would utilize the RTA bus #40 to go across town to the McDonalds to meet up with his friends.
Many of Bob’s pastimes included hunting, fishing, traveling, gardening and visiting with his friends. He loved to give vegetables and bakery goods to relatives, friends and the less fortunate. He enjoyed living in Cleveland and often shared his memories and experiences with his children. He never knew a stranger and enjoyed the company of others’.
Bob passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 19, 2015 the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. He adored all of the staff on his floor and enjoyed joking with them daily.
