Ronald Duane Smith, affectionately known to many as ”Ron,” “Ronnie,” “Smitty,” and “I Am,” passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025, in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
Ronnie was born on December 13, 1959, in Akron, OH to Marie Myrick (née Smith) and Ronald Smith.
A 1978 graduate of Garfield High School, Ronnie was known for both his athletic and academic talents. He was a proud member of the school’s Academic Challenge team, which competed on Cleveland’s local Channel 5. He was also a star on the Garfield track team, where his natural speed and dedication made him a strong competitor.
After high school, he attended both Central State University and Youngstown State University before joining the U.S. Army. He later continued his service in the Army Reserves, proud to wear the uniform and serve his country. Following his time in the military, Ronnie successfully completed training to work with People Express Airlines at Cleveland-Hopkins Airport.
A self-employed craftsman, Ronnie was a true jack of all trades. Brilliant with his hands and quick to learn anything he set his mind to, he tackled projects with care, creativity, and a strong work ethic. Whether fixing something, building something new, or helping someone out, he took pride in being dependable and resourceful.
Music was a constant in Ronnie’s life. He loved the sounds of Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and many more great artists of his time. That same soulful energy also showed up in his writing. Ronnie was a talented poet who spent years building a personal catalog of heartfelt and thought-provoking work.
He was a loving father to his daughter, Kristin (Caleb) Barnett, and a proud grandfather to Brynn and Ivy Barnett. He spent many years of his life with his devoted partner, Ann Marie Paul, with whom he shared a steady bond.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Smith. He is survived by his mother Marie Myrick, stepfather Charles Myrick, daughter Kristin (Caleb) Barnett, granddaughters Brynn and Ivy Barnett, his partner Ann Marie Paul, and brother Randol Smith. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who loved him deeply and will carry his memory forward.
Ronnie will be remembered for his generous spirit, quick wit, quiet strength, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. His presence will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
