Sarah L. McCord, age 58, transitioned peacefully on January 25, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was born on July 19, 1967, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Armelia McCord and Willie Joe McCord, who preceded her in death.
Sarah kept her Southern, country roots after relocating to Cleveland as a child. She quickly became known for her vibrant, larger-than-life personality. You would hear her before you could see her. Her voice was distinctive. Her personality was bold. Her heart was pure. She made friends everywhere she went, embracing people for who they were and offering acceptance without judgment. Humor was her favorite tool to use for deepening connections. She believed in staying connected and made it a priority—whether that meant taking a local bus or traveling out of state to visit loved ones. She was often concerned about others, putting their needs before her own, and would give her last.
She found joy in the simple things: listening to music, taking car rides, and being surrounded by people. She dedicated over 20 years of service to Bon Appétit at Case Western Reserve University, where she built lasting relationships and bonded with students and faculty.
Behind her big personality was a woman who did the very best she could with what she had. Her affairs were in order, her heart was full, and her life was well lived. Having run her race unapologetically and vibrantly, Sarah was ready for rest—and God graciously granted her request—job well done.
Sarah leaves her mother, Armelia McCord.
Three beloved children, whom she adored and was immensely proud of: Jasmine McCord, Samuel Long, and Tyeishia Phillpotts (Phillip Phillpotts).
She was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Yasmine Smith, Robert Smith, Nova Bailey, Jeremiah Veah, Phillip Phillpotts Jr., and Paxton Phillpotts, and one great-granddaughter, Kanairi Smith.
She is also survived by her siblings: Jeannace Culpepper, Sonja McCord Smith (Richard Smith), Armelia “Meme” McCord Greenwood, and Rafael McCord. She was preceded in death by her brother, Willie Joe McCord Jr.
Sarah also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, god children, close friends and students.
Her earthly journey has ended, but her memories will be cherished always as her spirit rests in God’s eternal care.
