Born Shirley Ann Hood on December 7, 1952, the 11th anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor. She loved to remind people of this fact, but little did they know that it was a precursor to her personality.
Shirley was born to Mae Hood and Jake Edward Hood. She was the youngest of five children. She was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio in the Wade Park and Lakeview area. She graduated from Cleveland Public Schools, after which she attended trade school and became a certified typist. She did administrative work after high school until she became a housewife in 1972, after she met Elvin Hayes, aka “AL.” It was instant love and Al and Shirley were married for 50 Years, and raised 4 children together, including one from Al’s previous marriage. They also raised one grandson.
She was a fun, loving, very outspoken, and just a huge personality, that always left a lasting impression on whomever she met. She was often referred to, affectionately of course by her family and friends, as “crazy ass Shirley Hood.” A true diva in every way, she loved fashion and diamonds and owned lots of both. Shirley also loved bingo, slots, Motown music, anything Tyler Perry made, and most of all Law-and-Order SVU. Every two weeks, she would get her nails and toes done or it would be trouble. Mama was sharp to the end. One week before she transitioned, someone came to do her nails and toes, per her demand. Shirley loved her children and grandchildren, and was always ready to go to war for them.
Preceding Shirley in death were her dad, Jake E. Hood; her mom, Mae Hood; her brother, Edward Hood (Bubba); three sisters; her Husband, Elvin Hayes, and her daughter, Latresa Hood.
She leaves behind 3 children, daughter, Felicia (Lewis Sr.); son, Shundell and daughter, Ebony; 6 grandchildren, Jadell, Jazzmine, Diontray, Antoin, Lewis Jr. and Elijah; 10 great grandchildren, Chloe, Deonte, Deontre, Taylor, Armani, Amiyah, Daison, Dion, Dream and August; her lifelong friend turned sister, Linda Williams, and son-in-law, Lewis Glass; and a host of family members and friends.
