Timothy Wayne Portis Sr., affectionately known as “Tim,” transitioned from labor to rest on May 29, 2025, with his family by his side.
He was born in Akron, Ohio, on November 9, 1966, to the union of James and Sally Portis. A proud product of Akron Public Schools, Tim graduated from Buchtel High School in 1985, where he was voted “Best Dressed” by his classmates—a title he wore with pride. Known for his sharp sense of style, Tim had an eye for fashion and a closet that could rival a storefront. Whether it was a tailored suit, a crisp pair of slacks, or just the perfect pair of sneakers, he believed in showing up with confidence and class. His signature looks and cool demeanor and his infectious smile made him stand out in every room he entered, and even decades after high school, people still remember how clean-cut and fly Tim always kept to himself.
As a natural born leader, Tim’s strong work ethic and ability to connect with people led him into management early in his career. He began his professional journey as a manager at McDonald’s in Akron, Ohio. His career took him to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he continued to serve as a manager at McDonald’s.
After some time, Tim and his beloved wife, Lynn Portis, along with their children, returned home to Ohio to be closer to loved ones. There, he continued his management career at Wendy’s.
In 1995, following in the footsteps of his father, Tim began a new chapter at Chrysler in Twinsburg, Ohio. In 2010, Tim relocated to Detroit, Michigan with Chrysler Motor Works. Over the course of nearly 30 years, he remained a dedicated employee.
Outside of work, Tim was full of life and laughter. He was the kind of person who could light up any room—always smiling, always joking, and often cracking the corniest jokes. He had a special gift for making people laugh, especially because he never failed to laugh at his own jokes first. Tim was the life of every party, bringing joy, energy, and his signature sense of humor wherever he went.
A kind and generous soul, Tim would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought. He had a heart as big as his laugh and was always ready to help a friend, family member, or even a stranger in need. He loved to cook of which he did very well, and took pride in feeding both bellies and spirits. In quieter moments, you could often find him shopping online—Amazon packages arriving at the door were a regular occurrence, much to his amusement.
Family came first above everything else. He gave with love and left a legacy of laughter, kindness, and unforgettable memories.
Tim is preceded in death by his mother Sally H. Portis, brother James C. Portis II, daughter Tamara L. Portis. Special cousins Clarice and Charles Starks.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory: His father James C. Portis Sr, sons Timothy W. (Tylar) Portis II and James C Portis III, daughter Devine H. Portis. Siblings Jaque Butler, Edward Hamilton, and Jeffrey Stevenson. Grand-children TayLynn Portis, Brooklyn and Bryson Clack. Special Cousin and one of the “Three Amigos” Dejohn Stroud. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, friends, and other family members to cherish his memory.
