Van Richard Henderson Sr., age 79, peacefully departed this life on April 18, 2023, at his home in Cleveland Heights, OH, surrounded by his family. Van was born December 17, 1943, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to Crystal and Henry Henderson. The family eventually moved to Cleveland, OH. Van as a young man, grew up in the Ashbury area of Cleveland, OH. He graduated from East High School. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for many years.
After meeting Betty, who he affectionately called “Baby Cakes,” at Community College in Cleveland, OH, they married in 1969. Together they became the proud parents of two children.
Van was looked upon as the patriarch in his family and someone to look up to. He was viewed as a role model and great support to the family unit. Van was baptized at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church by Rev. Fuller. He attended Gethsemane Baptist Church with his wife. His wife departed this life in 2012, after her passing, he moved to Florida. While in Florida, he made many friends, attended a local church and many community events. During his visits back home, he would frequently attend Forest Hills Church Pres. On a recent trip home, he remained in Cleveland to care for his younger brother. Van was known to frequently travel, visit family, and always meeting new acquaintances, sharing his “retired business card,” he loved to attended concerts, was a member of the Cleveland Museum of Arts and Cleveland Orchestra, being very proud of his recently visit to the Van Gogh exhibit.
He retired from General Motors in 1992. Later, he worked for Alcoa and then Ford Motor Plant.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Betty Henderson; father, Henry Henderson; mother, Crystal Barnes; and stepfather, James Barnes.
Van Richard Henderson Sr. leaves to cherish his memories and legacy: his daughter, Angela Henderson; son, Van Henderson Jr.; grandchildren, Aston, Erin and JaQuan; 4 great-grandchildren, Camryn – the best coffee maker according to his grandad, King, Zoey, and Dakarai Jr. Van also leaves to cherish his memories: his sister and hanging buddy, Jean Harris; and his brother, Willard Henderson; as well as a host of favorite nieces, favorite nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, uncles, aunts, and several friends both near and far.
