Wendell Rodgers Head Sr. was born on July 20, 1941, in Griffin, Georgia, to Walter Jerome and Fannie Mae Head. To this union, eight children were conceived. His brother Harold preceded him in death after passing away from an accident at an early age. Wendell’s brothers Calvin and Jerome, and sisters Kathryn and Lynette also proceeded him in death.
Wendell was a member of Holly Grove Baptist Church, where he accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. He attended Griffin Public Schools, including Pleasant Grove Elementary where his mother was a teacher. He graduated from Fairmount High School in 1958, which was the only high school that blacks in the area were allowed to attend. After high school, he went on to work at Griffin/Spalding Hospital.
A short time after that, Wendell relocated to Cleveland, Ohio where he worked for Ford Motor Company for over four decades. He worked his way through various positions and continued his education in the trade, eventually becoming a Tool and Dye maker.
Wendell was always the life of the party, and enjoyed playing music loudly, especially his favorite artist Anita Baker, and telling jokes with friends. He often attended Cleveland Browns games with his brothers. He hosted card parties and BBQ’s. He had a love for cars, and attended the Cleveland Car Show every year with his kids.
Wendell was kindhearted and would help in anyone in need. He returned to Georgia often to visit friends and family. Wendell is survived by his children: Wendell Jr., Cedric, Carlita, Wendy, and Aaron; grandchildren Zipporah, Shavonne, Nate, Jonnell, Jon, Jonez, Jonah (deceased), Jonisha, Jonnae, Journey, and Nile; brothers James and Marcellus; and a host of great-grandchildren, family, and friends.
