Willie Frank Woods was born on January 3, 1945, in Eclectic, Alabama. He was the eldest of six sons born to Fuller and Josephine Woods. From an early age, Willie had a deep connection with the Lord, later reaffirming his faith when he rededicated his life to Christ at Lake Galilee Baptist Church under Pastor John L. Price.
When he was a young boy, Willie’s family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and he attended Cleveland Public Schools. After graduating from Glenville High School in 1963, Willie started working as a tow motor driver, machine operator, and union steward at Jefferson Smurfit Corporation. He retired after 41 years of dedicated service, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.
Family was at the heart of Willie’s life. He doted on his children and grandchildren, making sure to give them plenty of love and attention. His “Grandpa’s Summer Camp” was an annual tradition where he provided care and fun-filled activities for his grandkids and the neighborhood kids. Whether it was through camping, fishing, cooking out, or just sitting around having a good time, Willie loved spending time with his family and creating cherished memories.
Willie was a man of many talents. Known for his handyman skills, Willie was the go-to person when something needed fixing or building. His handywork and creativity were on full display during the holidays, with his award-winning Christmas decorations lighting up his yard every year. Also, as a lover of music, Willie never passed up an opportunity to sing, often taking center stage with a microphone in hand.
Those who loved Willie affectionately called him “Big Willie” or “Chill.” He had the remarkable ability to light up a room with his infectious smile and vibrant energy. Because he was always ready to share a laugh, a joke or a funny story, Willie’s presence made any gathering more joyful. Willie frequently checked-in on his neighbors, family, and friends, ensuring that everyone was doing well. He had many loving relationships, and his humor, generosity and larger-than-life personality made him beloved to many.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Fuller and Josephine Woods, and two brothers: Wesley Woods and Wade Woods. He leaves to mourn his passing, three daughters: Juanita Woods, Denise McCory (Reginald), and Angela Blake (Dyarll); seven grandchildren: Marquita Jackson, Marcus Jackson, Mariah Jackson, Taylor McCory, Reginald McCory, Jr., Breanna McCory, and Kamryn Blake; four great-grandchildren: Laila Meeks, Joseph Meeks, Jr., Ta’layia Jackson, and Mason Jackson; three brothers: Lawrence Woods, Fuller Woods, Jr., and Robert Woods, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Willie’s life was a beautiful testament of love, laughter, and devotion to family. Though we will miss him dearly, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
