Alfred “Al” Nevels was born on April 10, 1943, to Joseph Lee and Sarah Marie Nevels. The eldest of seven sons-and a PK (preacher’s kid)-he was raised with strong Christian values and structure. From an early age, Al displayed an independent spirit and stepped out on his own at just 16 years old to begin forging his own path. He met the love of his life, Jacqueline (Preer) Nevels, while working at a local discount store. Al graduated from Garfield High School in 1961. He went on to serve his country in the United States Navy and attended the University of Akron.
Al and Jacque married in 1964 and were blessed with three daughters – Leticia, Tiffani, and LaToya – whom he affectionately referred to as “Al’s Angels”. He was a devoted husband and proud father, raising his daughters to feel just as at home in ballet shoes as they were on a tractor. Al loved the outdoors and placed a strong emphasis on health and fitness. He was an avid runner and tennis player and followed a pescatarian lifestyle for much of his adult life.
Al had a natural talent for sales, a unique ability to connect with people, and an innate entrepreneurial spirit. He owned and operated multiple businesses, one of which was a franchise that moved the family to Columbus, Ohio in 1985. Al and Jacque always dreamed of warmer climate and coastal living. As soon as Jacque retired, they moved to picturesque La Jolla, California in 1996 where they enjoyed the remainder of their 62 years together.
Rooted in the Apostolic faith of his upbringing, Al widened his spiritual path to include the New Thought philosophy, which deeply shaped his perspective on life, God, and the power of consciousness. He became a trained practitioner, teacher, writer, and speaker. He served on board of his home church, One Heart-One Mind Center for Spiritual Living in California and frequently attended Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles and Hillside International Truth Center in Atlanta (virtually). Al found great joy in music and song. He was a longtime member of the One Heart-One Mind choir and featured as a soloist.
Al made his transition on April 13, 2026, just days after celebrating his 83rd birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Sarah Marie Nevels, and his brothers, Kenneth Jay Nevels, Anthony Glenn Nevels, and Jonathan Lemuel Nevels.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Jacqueline Preer Nevels; his three daughters, Leticia Mari Lewis, Tiffani Yvette Nevels, and LaToya Nevels Coffey (Michael); his brothers, Laurence Eugene Nevels (Dolorus), Michael Leon Nevels (Staci), and Keith Ray Nevels (Lisa); six grandchildren, Cory Matthew Williams, Jaelen Michael Lewis, Cole Mason Coffey, Kendall Malia Coffey, Tristan Scot Reid, and Austin Glenn Reid; one great grandchild, Corynn Marie Williams; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
