Alvin Eugene McClain, age 89, went home to be with the Lord on February 24, 2024. Alvin passed peacefully at home with his wife and daughter by his side.
Alvin Eugene McClain was born on February 8, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio. Alvin was the middle child born to his parents the late Johnie and Susie McClain.
Alvin and his devoted, loving, wife, Besthina (Thina) Burley McClain were united in Holy Matrimony on November 18, 1961. To this blessed union, Alvin and Thina welcomed two children: Craig (Aris) and Symone. Alvin is also grandfather to Sharee.
Alvin graduated from Thomas A. Edison Occupational School in 1954. Alvin joined the United States Army 2nd Armored Division in 1958 where he served with his future brother-in-law, Elmo Brooks. Alvin was honorably discharged from the Army after serving an overseas tour in Germany.
Alvin worked at World Publishing, A & P Foods, and retired from his maintenance position at Things Remembered, Inc./Cole National Corporation in 1999. During his retirement Alvin spent his time doing what he loved, working with his hands. He built out his basement by adding a computer/CB room, media space, exercise room, and workshop. Alvin could build and fix just about anything. He loved to show off his new projects and creations. Alvin and Thina spent most of their time together. They enjoyed sitting on the porch, working in the yard, traveling to Atlanta, GA to visit their daughter Symone, or taking rides around town.
Alvin was very active in his younger years playing football, baseball, golf, and bowling. Alvin was an avid bowler. Alvin and Thina bowled on various leagues together; Craig continues to bowl and finally matched his dad’s 300 game achievement.
Alvin loved people. He would help a stranger and was always there for his friends and family. He left an impact on so many people he met throughout his life. No matter how small the gesture, there was always a lesson he tried to instill. His niece Delores Momon still remembers how her Uncle Alvin taught her how to tie her shoes to receive a reward of a quarter. Alvin also cherished his granddaughter, Sharee, whom he built a balance beam to help her with her gymnastics.
Alvin was preceded in death by his siblings: Deloris McDonald, Horace, Jerome, and Celestine Brooks. He is survived by brother-in-law’s: Elmo Brooks, Gardenia, CA; Roy Moss, Jr., Warrenton, GA; and Billy Daggett, Sr., Thomson, GA.
Alvin was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and friend to so many people. He will be missed, and his memory will remain with us all.
