Alvin Ross, the second son of the late Henry Ross and Betty Young (Percy), was born in Birmingham, AL, December 8, 1957. He entered eternal rest on Friday, June 5, 2026.
Alvin attended Akron Public Schools and graduated from East High School. Alvin, known for his sense of humor, big warm smile, and his twinkling eyes, was a kind soul with a loving heart.
Alvin enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1977, where he rapidly thrived. He achieved the rank of E6 (Staff Sergeant) and was promoted more quickly than his peers. He was stationed in Germany and often spoke of this TDY (Temporary Duty Assignment). Alvin’s service prior to and in Germany prepared him for many things, but the battle that awaited him at home would prove to be life-altering. Following an accident on Memorial Day weekend in 1982, he embarked on tours of duty he hadn’t learned about in his military training. This new obstacle course would place many physical and other adversities in his path. Through every challenge, he stood his ground with remarkable strength, resiliency, and an honorable sense of pride. He marched forward with the discipline of a soldier and the courage of a man with tenacity, character, and an enduring home. He was a proud Retired U.S. Army Veteran
He was very supportive in family activities, and his home was often the backdrop for gatherings for family and friends from near and far. At these gatherings, you could find Alvin doing what he loved best, playing card games. He especially looked forward to playing various card games with his brother Michael, who would come to visit from California every other year. They would spend hours playing cards and talking smack. Alvin was also an accomplished Chess player and loved the game.
Alvin was a favorite of his nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews – he lovingly referred to them as “Critters!” Alvin was witty and considerate. When he couldn’t come up with a fitting response to the girls in the family, whether in words or deeds, he would simply tell us to “Turn Pretty.”
We are saddened by his transition and will forever love and miss him dearly. Holding on to our faith, we are thankful that Alvin’s Final Duty Station guarantees he will rest free of pain in the true Land of the Free and Home of the Blessed and Brave!
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Ross, stepfather Percy Young, sister Joyce Purdie, and nieces Crystal Purdie and Monique Ford-Young. He is survived by his mother, Betty Young; brothers and sisters: Michael Ross (Granada), Angela Nixson, Linda Shelburn, and Stephen Young (Diane); niece, Lorna Daniels; uncle: Elmore “Popp” Williams, Jr. (Rosie), and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
