Amy Thurman Hamilton was born on December 7, 1932 in Jefferson County, Alabama to Silas and Elna Lewis Thurman. Amy Thurman Hamilton was born on December 7, 1932 in Jefferson County, Alabama to Silas and Elna Lewis Thurman. She transitioned from this life on February 14, 2020, at the age of 87 years, at Rockynol Retirement Center in Akron, Ohio.
Amy graduated from East High School as class Salutatorian and worked at Ohio Bell, now AT&T, working her way up to Supervisor. She married Robert Morgan Hamilton of Cleveland, Ohio on May 22, 1969. Amy loved gospel and classical music; was an avid reader, sometimes reading a book a day. She had a joyful and playful spirit. She loved word games, such as Scrabble. Amy took great pride in the achievements of her family. After retiring, Amy returned to her hometown, Akron, Ohio, where she volunteered tutoring children. Upon returning to Akron, Amy proudly considered Arlington Church of God as being her church home.
Amy was preceded in death by her mother, Elna Lewis Thurman; father, Silas Thurman Sr.; husband, Robert Hamilton; step-children, R. Morgan Hamilton Stayi Bhava Das (Robert Hamilton II); brother-in-law, Edward Powers and nephew, Ronald Powers Sr.
The second of four children, she leaves to mourn her passing her older sister, Eula M. Thurman Powers (Edward Powers, deceased); brothers, Silas and Benjamin L. Thurman (Jacquelyn D. Thurman); her loving family of five step-children, Maisha Hamilton, Ellen Hamilton Malone (Walter Malone), Alima Aziz (Willie Ross), Pamela Hamilton Foster (David Foster) and Hannah Hamilton (Bruce McCosar). Amy loved these children as if they were her own. Other family members who are left to mourn her passing are Wayne H. Fink and Theresa Hamilton; her twelve grandchildren, Eric Payne, Natasha Hill, Carmella Boxley, Rahan Boxley, Sulaimon Boxley, Sylvia Boxley, Hannah Boxley, Kinshasa Bennett, Karega Benett, Ayinde Bennett, Ramanada Hamilton and Angela Carter; ten great-grandchildren, Michael Carter, Elijah Payne, Khairiya Reid, Jade Hodrick, Chandler Hamilton, Paul Cortez, Hailey Neal, Hannah Ruth Mae Neal, Xavier Humber, and Jadá Sulé Boxley; nieces, Patricia Powers Hairston (Charles Hairston), Patricia (Pat) Powers; nephew, Benjamin L. Thurman Jr. (Heather Thurman); two great nieces, one great nephew, two great-great nephews, one great niece, three great-great-great nephews and one great-great-great niece; a dear friend, Margaret Person, Margaret’s children and grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Amy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
