Ardella Sarah Nelson, age 104, went to be with the Lord on February 13, 2023.
Ardella Sarah (nee) Lynch Nelson was born on February 20th, 1918, in Ashville N.C., she spent her early years there, with her aunts, uncles and grandparents,. She often reminded the family that her one grandfather George Lynch lived to be 108 years. Longevity was a part of her heritage. She moved to Cleveland, OH, when she was 12 years old to live with her mother, Doshia Merriweather.
Ardella attended Cleveland Public Schools, graduating from John Hay High School. She married James Nelson in 1938 and had two children: Gloria Jean (deceased) and Kenneth Franklin.
She did “day work” for a short time and soon took the Civil Service exam to become a Customer Service Representative for the Navy Finance Center. She retired in 1985 after 34 years.
The family lived in the Glenville neighborhood, later moving to East Cleveland. She always put her family first. She purchased an apartment building so the family could live together. She later moved to Warrensville Heights, where she lived until her death.
Ardella was a faithful member of Union Avenue Christian and Missionary Alliance Church for more than 70 years. She served in the choir and as a Sunday School teacher. She spent her free time babysitting grand and great grandchildren, gardening her tomatoes, making chocolate chip cookies, watching Jeopardy, having long discussions with her son, reading, and doing crossword puzzles.
Ardella passed away peacefully at the age of 104 while at Heritage of Hudson Care Facility in Hudson, Oh. Ardella, lovingly known as Gaga, leaves to mourn her son, Kenneth Nelson. Granddaughter, Sharmayne Perkins; sisters, Lois Washington and Celesta Pless; great-grandchildren, Shera Davis, James Davis and Jasmine Buckner, and great -great Grandson Traeshaun Davis.
